Indications

A-Mycin is a topical treatment used for acne, pimples, and bacterial skin infections that are susceptible to this medication.

Pharmacology

Erythromycin is a macrolide antibiotic. While it is typically bacteriostatic (it stops bacteria from reproducing), it can be bactericidal (it kills bacteria) at high concentrations. Although the exact mechanism for its effect on inflammatory acne lesions isn't fully known, it's believed to be due to its antibiotic properties.

Dosage & Administration

Apply the lotion to the affected areas in the morning and evening. Before application, thoroughly wash the skin with warm water and soap, rinse, and pat dry. Use fingertips or an applicator to lightly spread the medication; do not rub it in. This treatment can be used on acne lesions on the face, neck, shoulders, chest, and back. Wash your hands after use. Each container should be used once and then discarded.

Interaction

A-Mycin interacts with Clindamycin.

Contraindications

Do not use A-Mycin if you are hypersensitive to Erythromycin or any of the other ingredients in the lotion.

Side Effects

Potential side effects include redness (erythema), peeling or flaking of the skin, a burning sensation, eye irritation, tenderness, dryness, or oily skin.

Pregnancy & Lactation

The safety of this medication during pregnancy has not been established. It should only be used if the potential benefits outweigh the potential risks to the fetus. Erythromycin is excreted in breast milk, so caution should be exercised when it is administered to a nursing mother.

Precautions & Warnings

This product is for external use only. Avoid contact with the eyes, nose, mouth, and other mucous membranes. The prolonged or repeated use of any antibiotic may lead to an overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms, which could result in a secondary infection. If this occurs, take appropriate measures as advised by a healthcare professional.

Use in Special Populations

The safety and effectiveness of A-Mycin in children under 12 years of age have not been established.
