AB Kit

Presentation: An AB Kit is a combination pack containing one tablet of Mifepristone 200 mg and four tablets of Misoprostol 200 mcg. It is used for the medical termination of pregnancy.

Indications: AB Kit is indicated for the termination of intrauterine pregnancy up to 63 days (9 weeks) of gestation, calculated from the first day of the last menstrual period. This should be performed under the guidance of a qualified medical professional.

Dosage and Administration: This kit must be used strictly according to the instructions provided by a qualified medical professional. The typical regimen involves:

  • Day 1: One tablet of Mifepristone (200 mg) is taken orally in a single dose, usually at a clinic or hospital under medical supervision.
  • Day 2 or 3 (24-48 hours after Mifepristone): Four tablets of Misoprostol (200 mcg each, total 800 mcg) are administered buccally (between the cheek and gum) or sublingually (under the tongue) until dissolved (about 30 minutes). The remaining fragments can be swallowed with water. Vaginal administration might also be recommended in some cases.

Following Misoprostol administration, patients will experience bleeding and cramping. Pain relief may be necessary. A follow-up visit with the prescribing doctor is crucial to confirm the complete termination of the pregnancy.

Side Effects: Common side effects associated with the use of AB Kit include:

  • Abdominal pain and cramps
  • Heavy vaginal bleeding, possibly with blood clots
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhoea
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • Headache

Less common but potentially serious side effects include very heavy or prolonged bleeding, signs of infection (fever, foul-smelling vaginal discharge), incomplete abortion, and allergic reactions. Any severe symptoms require immediate medical attention.

Precautions: AB Kit is contraindicated in several conditions, including:

  • Pregnancy beyond 63 days of gestation
  • Suspected or confirmed ectopic pregnancy (pregnancy outside the uterus)
  • Known allergy to Mifepristone or Misoprostol
  • Severe, uncontrolled asthma
  • Inherited porphyria
  • Chronic adrenal insufficiency
  • Severe liver, kidney, or heart disease
  • Uncontrolled high blood pressure
  • Bleeding disorders or current anticoagulant therapy
  • Presence of an intrauterine device (IUD) – it must be removed before use

Caution should be used in women with anaemia or bleeding disorders. The use of AB Kit necessitates medical supervision to ensure proper administration and management of potential complications.

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation: AB Kit is used to terminate an existing pregnancy and is therefore not intended for use in an ongoing pregnancy. It is generally advised against breastfeeding during the use of this medication, as it is unknown if Mifepristone or Misoprostol pass into breast milk and what effects they might have on a nursing infant. Breastfeeding women should seek guidance from their healthcare provider.

Storage: Store the AB Kit in a cool, dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
