ACI ORS

Presentation: Powder for oral solution, usually available in sachets. Common pack size is 10.25 gm per sachet for a 500 ml preparation. Manufactured by ACI Limited in Bangladesh.

Ingredients: Each sachet typically contains Sodium Chloride BP, Potassium Chloride BP, Trisodium Citrate Dihydrate BP, and Glucose Anhydrous BP. The specific amounts are detailed on the packaging (e.g., for a 500 ml preparation: Sodium Chloride 1.30 gm, Potassium Chloride 0.75 gm, Trisodium Citrate Dihydrate 1.45 gm, Glucose Anhydrous 6.75 gm). Some fruity flavored versions may have slightly different compositions including Dextrose, Fructose, and other ingredients for flavoring.

Indications: Indicated for the replacement of fluid and electrolyte loss due to acute diarrhea, vomiting, dehydration, and other conditions of fluid loss or lack of intake in patients of all age groups. It also helps prevent acidosis due to electrolyte imbalance.

Dosage & Administration: Dissolve the entire contents of one sachet in the specified amount of clean drinking water (usually 500 ml). Do not mix with hot water or heat the prepared solution. The prepared solution should be used within 12 hours.

  • Children less than 2 years: 50-100 ml after each loose stool or vomiting (10-20 teaspoonfuls).
  • Children 2 to 10 years: 100-200 ml after each loose stool or vomiting (½ to 1 glass).
  • Adults and children above 10 years: 200-400 ml after each loose stool or vomiting (1 to 2 glasses). The daily dose should be equivalent to the patient's fluid requirement for maintenance and replenishment of losses. Breastfeeding should continue for children, and normal food should be continued for adults during therapy.

Side Effects: No significant side effects are generally reported when used as directed.

Precautions: Depressed renal function, severe continuing diarrhea, or other critical fluid losses may require supplementation with parenteral fluids along with oral saline. Solutions containing acetate or gluconate ions should be used with caution as excess administration may result inmetabolic alkalosis. Solutions containing dextrose should be used with caution in patients with known subclinical or overt diabetesmellitus.

Storage: Do not store above 30°C. Keep away from light and wet places. Keep out of reach of children. Once prepared, the solution should be used within 12 hours.
