Actifol 15

Presentation: Tablets containing Folic Acid BP 5 mg. Available in strips of 15 tablets.

Indications: Indicated for the treatment and prevention of folic acid deficiency, which can lead to megaloblastic anemia. Also used in women of childbearing age to reduce the risk of neural tube defects in the fetus during pregnancy. May be used in other conditions where folic acid supplementation is required.

Dosage and Administration:

  • For folic acid deficiency: Adults and children over 12 years: 5 mg daily for 4 months, then maintenance dose of 5 mg every 1-7 days. Dosage may vary based on the severity of the deficiency and individual needs, as determined by a physician.
  • For prevention of neural tube defects: Women of childbearing age are usually advised to take 400 micrograms (0.4 mg) daily, starting before conception and continuing through the first trimester of pregnancy. Higher doses (e.g., 5 mg daily) may be recommended for women with a history of neural tube defects or those taking certain medications.
  • Follow the physician's instructions carefully.

Side Effects: Folic acid is generally well-tolerated. Side effects are rare at recommended doses. Very high doses may cause gastrointestinal disturbances such as nausea, bloating, and flatulence. Allergic reactions, such as skin rash or itching, are also rare.

Precautions: Folic acid should not be used to treat undiagnosed anemia, as it can mask the symptoms of Vitamin B12 deficiency, potentially leading to neurological damage. Individuals with pernicious anemia should receive Vitamin B12 along with folic acid. Folic acid may interact with certain medications, including some antiepileptic drugs (e.g., phenytoin, primidone, phenobarbital), methotrexate, and sulfasalazine, potentially reducing their effectiveness or altering folic acid metabolism.

Storage: Store in a cool and dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children. Store below 30°C.
