Adapel cream or gel is indicated for the topical treatment of acne vulgaris.
Â
Adapalene, the active ingredient, acts on specific retinoid receptors found in the skin of the face, back, and chest. It works as a modulator of cellular differentiation, keratinization, and inflammatory processesâall key factors in the development of acne. Adapalene binds to nuclear receptors that help to normalize the differentiation of follicular epithelial cells, which ultimately decreases the formation of microcomedones. The absorption of Adapalene through human skin is low.
Â
The safety and effectiveness of this product in children under 12 years of age have not been established.
Â
Apply a thin film of the gel or cream to the skin where lesions are present, using just enough to lightly cover the entire affected area.
Â
Use other potentially irritating topical products with caution, as this may increase the risk of skin irritation. This includes medicated or abrasive soaps, cleansers, and cosmetics with strong drying effects or high concentrations of alcohol, astringents, spices, or lime. If you have used products containing sulfur, resorcinol, or salicylic acid, it is best to wait until their effects on the skin have subsided before starting Adapel. If a combined use is necessary, it is better to apply the medications at different times of the day.
Â
Adapalene should not be used by individuals who are hypersensitive to Adapalene or any of its components.
Â
Commonly observed side effects during the first month of therapy include redness (erythema), scaling, dryness, itching, a burning or stinging sensation, and acne flares. These symptoms usually lessen with continued use.
Â
This medication should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. It is not known whether this drug is excreted in breast milk. Caution should be exercised when administering Adapalene to a nursing mother.
Â
Do not apply Adapel to cuts, abrasions, or eczematous or sunburned skin.
Â
Adapel is classified as a topical retinoid and related preparation.
Â
