Alestor

Presentation: Each tablet of Alestor contains 5 mg of allylestrenol. 

Indications: Alestor (allylestrenol) is a synthetic progestogen indicated for:

• Preventing threatened abortion (miscarriage).
• Preventing habitual abortion (recurrent pregnancy loss).
• Preventing threatened premature labor.
• Managing Intra Uterine Growth Retardation (IUGR).
• Treating menstrual problems such as amenorrhea (absence of menstruation) and irregular menstruation, although it is not primarily indicated for these and should be used under medical supervision.

Dosage and Administration: The dosage of Alestor depends on the specific indication and the patient's condition. It is crucial to follow the doctor's instructions. Typical dosages may include:

• Threatened abortion:1 tablet three times daily until symptoms disappear. 
• Habitual abortion:1-2 tablets daily as soon as pregnancy is diagnosed,continued for at least one month after the critical period.
• Intra Uterine Growth Retardation (IUGR): 1 tablet three times a day for at least two months, with the dose potentially reduced if symptoms improve.
• Threatened premature labor: Dosage must be determined individually, with high dosages (up to 40 mg daily) sometimes used.

Alestor tablets are for oral administration and can be taken with or without food.

Side Effects: Common side effects reported with Alestor may include gastrointestinal disturbances such as nausea, vomiting, and epigastric discomfort. Other reported side effects can include edema (swelling), bloating, anxiety, irritation, depression, and muscle pain. Visual disturbances and eye problems have also been mentioned.

Precautions: Alestor is contraindicated in patients with:

• Hypersensitivity to allylestrenol or any of its components.
• Severe liver disease.
• Undiagnosed vaginal bleeding.
• A history of thromboembolic disorders (blood clots).
• Hormone-dependent cancers such as breast or prostate cancer.
• Incomplete abortion.

Caution should be exercised in patients with heart disease, congestive heart failure, epilepsy, renal dysfunction, migraine headaches, or breathing diseases like asthma or COPD. It is not recommended for use in children under 16 years of age.

Storage: Store below 30°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
