Indications

Alice lotion is indicated for the topical treatment of head lice infestations in patients 6 months of age and older.

Pharmacology

Ivermectin, a member of the avermectin class, kills parasites by selectively binding to glutamate-gated chloride channels in their nerve and muscle cells. This action increases the permeability of the cell membrane to chloride ions, causing hyperpolarization of the cell, which leads to paralysis and death of the parasite. This drug is selectively active against parasites because mammals generally lack these glutamate-gated chloride channels, and Ivermectin has a low affinity for mammalian ligand-gated chloride channels. It also doesn't easily cross the blood-brain barrier in humans.

Dosage

Alice lotion is for topical use only on the scalp and hair; it is not for oral, ophthalmic, or intravaginal use. Apply up to one full tube to dry hair, ensuring the hair and scalp are thoroughly coated. Leave the lotion on for 10 minutes, then rinse it off completely with water. The tube is for single use only, and any unused portion should be discarded. Avoid contact with the eyes.

Administration

  1. Ensure your hair and scalp are completely dry.
  2. Apply the lotion directly to the dry hair and scalp, starting with the areas closest to the scalp and then working outwards to the tips of the hair.
  3. Rub the lotion throughout the hair, making sure to completely cover the entire head so that all lice and eggs are exposed to the lotion.
  4. Allow the lotion to remain on the hair and scalp for 10 minutes.
  5. After 10 minutes, rinse the lotion from the hair and scalp thoroughly with water only.
  6. Wash your hands properly after application.

Side Effects

Common side effects include conjunctivitis, ocular hyperemia (redness of the eye), eye irritation, dandruff, dry skin, and a skin burning sensation.

Pregnancy & Lactation

This product is classified as Pregnancy Category C. There are no adequate, well-controlled studies of Ivermectin lotion in pregnant women. It should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit outweighs the potential risk to the fetus. Caution should be exercised when administering this lotion to a nursing woman.
