Amilin Plus

Presentation: Tablets containing Amitriptyline Hydrochloride and Chlordiazepoxide in various strengths (e.g., Amitriptyline Hydrochloride 12.5mg + Chlordiazepoxide 5mg, or Amitriptyline Hydrochloride 25mg + Chlordiazepoxide 5mg).

Indications: This medicine is used to treat people who have moderate to severe depression along with moderate to severe anxiety. Symptoms that may improve in the first week of treatment include:

• Trouble sleeping (insomnia)
• Feelings of guilt or worthlessness
• Agitation
• Mental and physical anxiety
• Thoughts of suicide
• Loss of appetite (anorexia)

Dosage & Administration: The optimal dose varies depending on the severity of symptoms and individual patient response. The dosage should be reduced to the lowest effective amount once a satisfactory response is achieved. A larger portion of the daily dose may be taken at bedtime, or a single dose at bedtime may be sufficient for some patients. The usual initial adult dosage is 3 or 4 tablets daily in divided doses. Follow your doctor's instructions carefully.

Side Effects: Many symptoms associated with depression, such as loss of appetite, tiredness, weakness, restlessness, and lethargy, can also be side effects of this medication. The most commonly reported side effects include:

• Drowsiness
• Dry mouth
• Constipation
• Blurred vision
• Dizziness
• Bloating

Less common side effects may include vivid nightmares, impotence, tremor, disorientation, and nasal congestion.

Precautions:

• Use with caution in patients with a history of seizures.
• Close supervision is necessary when given to patients with overactive thyroid or those on thyroid medication.
• Standard precautions should be followed when treating patients with impaired kidney or liver function.
• All children and adolescents on antidepressants should be closely monitored for worsening depression, suicidal thoughts, and unusual changes in behavior.
• This medication may block the blood pressure-lowering effect of certain drugs like guanethidine.
• Avoid in patients with known hypersensitivity to benzodiazepines or tricyclic antidepressants.
• Should not be taken with a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI).
• May cause drowsiness and impair the ability to perform tasks requiring mental alertness, such as driving or operating machinery.
• Alcohol should be avoided while taking this medication.
• Safe use during pregnancy and breastfeeding has not been established.
