Presentation:Each film-coated tablet contains Metronidazole BP 400 mg. Available in strips of [mention typical strip size, e.g., 10 tablets].
Indications: Prevention of post-operative infections due to anaerobic bacteria. Treatment of septicaemia, bacteraemia, peritonitis, brain abscess, pelvic abscess, pelvic cellulitis, and post-operative wound infections caused by anaerobes. Urogenital trichomoniasis. Bacterial vaginosis.All forms of amoebiasis. Giardiasis. Acute ulcerative gingivitis.Anaerobically infected leg ulcers and pressure sores. Acute dental infectionsdue to anaerobic organisms. Antibiotic-associated pseudomembranous colitis.
Dosage and Administration: Dosage varies depending on the condition being treated and the age of the patient. For Trichomoniasis in adults and children over 10 years: 200 mg three times daily or 400 mg twice daily for 7 days, or 800 mg in the morning and 1-2 gm at night for 2 days, or 2 gm as a single dose for 1 day. For Intestinal amoebiasis in adults and children over 10 years: 400 mg three times daily for 5 days. For Giardiasis in adults and children over 10 years: 2 gm once daily for 3 days. For Acute ulcerative gingivitis in adults and children over 10 years: 200 mg three times daily for 3-7 days. For Bacterial Vaginosis in adults and children over 10 years: 400 mg twice daily for 7 days or 2 gm as a single dose for 1 day. For Anaerobic infections in adults and children over 10 years: 800 mg initially, then 400 mg three times daily for 7 days.Amodis 400 tablets should be swallowed whole with water, preferably after meals.
Pharmacology:Metronidazole is an antiprotozoal and antibacterial agent. It is a nitroimidazole that is selectively toxic to anaerobic bacteria and protozoa. It enters the organism and its nitro group is reduced to a reactive intermediate that interacts with DNA, causing cell death.
Side Effects:Common side effects may include metallic taste, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, drowsiness, and rashes.
Precautions: Caution should be exercised when administering Amodis to patients with hepatic encephalopathy. Patients should be warned that Amodis may darken urine. Avoid alcohol consumption during and for at least 48 hours after treatment due to the possibility of a disulfiram-like reaction. Use with caution in patients with central nervous system disorders or a history of blood dyscrasias.
Pregnancy & Lactation: The US FDA pregnancy category for Metronidazole is B. However, it should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Metronidazole is excreted in breast milk, and breastfeeding is not recommended during treatment and for 12-24 hours after the last dose.
Storage: Store below 30°C, protected from light. Keep out of the reach of children.
