Amotrex 200 

Presentation:Each tablet contains Metronidazole BP 200 mg.

Indications:Amotrex (Metronidazole) is indicated for the treatment of infections caused by susceptible anaerobic bacteria and certain protozoa, including:  

• Prevention of post-operative infections due to anaerobic bacteria.  
• Treatment of septicaemia, bacteraemia, peritonitis, brain abscess, pelvic abscess, pelvic cellulitis, and post-operative wound infections caused by anaerobes.  
• Urogenital trichomoniasis in both females and males.  
• Bacterial vaginosis (non-specific vaginitis).  
• All forms of amoebiasis (intestinal and extra-intestinal, including asymptomatic cyst passers).  
• Giardiasis.  
• Acute ulcerative gingivitis.  
• Anaerobically infected leg ulcers and pressure sores.  
• Acute dental infections due to anaerobic organisms(e.g., acute pericoronitis and acute apical infections).  
• Antibiotic-associated pseudomembranous colitis.¹⁶  

Dosage and Administration: Amotrex 200 tablets should be swallowed whole with water and are recommended to be taken during or after meals. The dosage and duration of treatment depend on the type and severity of the infection, as well as the patient's age and weight.Always follow the instructions provided by your physician.

• Adults and children over 10 years: Dosage varies widely depending on the infection being treated. Examples include:
  • Trichomoniasis: 200 mg three times daily for 7 days, or 800 mg in the morning and 1200 mg in the evening for 2 days, or 2 g as a single dose. Concurrent treatment of the sexual partner is usually recommended.
  • Bacterial Vaginosis: 400 mg twice daily for 7 days, or 2 g as a single dose.
  • Amoebiasis: 400-800 mg three times daily for 5-10 days depending on the type of amoebiasis.
  • Giardiasis: 2 g once daily for 3 days.
  • Acute Ulcerative Gingivitis: 200 mg three times daily for 3 days.
  • Anaerobic Infections: 800 mg initially followed by 400 mg every 8 hours for approximately 7 days.
  • Surgical Prophylaxis: 400 mg every 8 hours for 3-4 days, starting 24 hours before surgery and continued post-operatively.
• Children: Dosage is usually based on body weight and the specific infection. For example, in children with amoebiasis, the dosage ranges from 100-200 mg two to four times daily depending on age. For giardiasis in children aged 7-10 years, the dose is typically 1 g once daily for 3 days.

Side Effects: Common side effects may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal discomfort, and a metallic taste in the mouth. Less common side effects can include headache, dizziness, drowsiness, and skin rash. Rarely, more serious side effects such as peripheral neuropathy or seizures may occur. Consumption of alcohol during treatment with Metronidazole may lead to a disulfiram-like reaction (flushing, nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, headache). Metronidazole may also darken urine.

Precautions: Amotrex (Metronidazole) is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to metronidazole or other nitroimidazole derivatives. It should be used with caution in patients with active central nervous system disease, a history of blood dyscrasias, and severe hepatic impairment. Patients should be advised to avoid alcohol consumption during and for at least one day after treatment. Metronidazole can interact with certain medications, including warfarin, lithium, and phenytoin.  

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation: Metronidazole is classified as Pregnancy Category B. It should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Metronidazole is excreted in human milk, and caution should be exercised when administering Amotrex to a breastfeeding woman; some guidelines suggest temporarily withholding breastfeeding during treatment.  

Storage: Keep in a dry place away from light and heat. Keep out of the reach of children. Store below 30°C.
