Amotrex 400 

Presentation: Each tablet contains Metronidazole BP 400 mg. Amotrex 400 is a product of ACI Limited in Bangladesh and is typically available in blister packs.  

Indications:Amotrex (Metronidazole) is indicated for the treatment of infections caused by susceptible anaerobic bacteria and protozoa, including:  

• Prevention of post-operative infections due to anaerobic bacteria.  
• Treatment of septicaemia, bacteraemia, peritonitis, brain abscess, pelvic abscess, pelvic cellulitis, and post-operative wound infections caused by anaerobes.  
• Urogenital trichomoniasis in females and males.  
• Bacterial vaginosis (non-specific vaginitis).  
• All forms of amoebiasis (intestinal and extra-intestinal, including asymptomatic cyst passers).  
• Giardiasis.  
• Acute ulcerative gingivitis.  
• Anaerobically infected leg ulcers and pressure sores.  
• Acute dental infections due to anaerobic organisms(e.g., acute pericoronitis and acute apical infections).  
• Antibiotic-associated pseudomembranous colitis.  

Dosage and Administration: Amotrex 400 tablets should be swallowed whole with water and are recommended to be taken during or after meals. The dosage and duration of treatment depend on the type and severity of the infection, as well as the patient's age and weight.Always follow the instructions provided by your physician.

• Adults and children over 10 years: Dosage varies widely depending on the infection being treated. Examples include:
  • Trichomoniasis:200 mg three times daily for 7 days, or 400 mg twice daily for 7 days, or 800 mg in the morning and 1200 mg in the evening for 2days, or 2 g as a single dose. Concurrent treatment of the sexual partner is usually recommended.
  • Bacterial Vaginosis: 400 mg twice daily for 7 days, or 2 g as a single dose.
  • Amoebiasis: 400-800 mg three times daily for 5-10 days depending on the type of amoebiasis.
  • Giardiasis: 2 g once daily for 3 days, or 400 mg three times daily for 5-7 days.
  • Anaerobic Infections:Initial dose of 800 mg followed by 400 mg every 8 hours.  
• Children: Dosage is usually calculated based on body weight and the specific infection. Consult a physician for appropriate dosage.

Complete the full course of treatment as prescribed, even if you feel better.

Side Effects: Common side effects of Amotrex (Metronidazole) may include:

• Nausea, vomiting  
• Diarrhoea  
• Unpleasant metallic taste
• Furry tongue, sore mouth
• Loss of appetite
• Abdominal discomfort

Less common side effects may include headache, dizziness, drowsiness, insomnia, weakness, skin rash, and itching. Rarely, more serious side effects like peripheral neuropathy or seizures can occur.If you experience any severe or persistent side effects, seek medical advice promptly.

Precautions:Amotrex (Metronidazole) is contraindicated in individuals with known hypersensitivity to metronidazole or other nitroimidazole derivatives.Exercise caution in patients with:

• Active or a history of central nervous system disorders (e.g., epilepsy).
• Severe hepatic impairment.
• Blood dyscrasias.

Alcohol consumption should be avoided during Amotrex treatment and for at least one day after completion due to the potential for a disulfiram-like reaction.Metronidazole can interact with certain medications, such as warfarin, lithium, phenytoin, and phenobarbital.Inform your doctor about all other medications you are taking.

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation: Metronidazole should be used during pregnancy only if clearly indicated and the potential benefits outweigh the possible risks to the foetus. Metronidazole passes into breast milk.Breastfeeding is generally not recommended during treatment with Amotrex and for a period after the last dose, as advised by your doctor.

Storage: Store in a dry place, away from light and heat. Keep out of the reach of children.
