Indications:
- Treatment of hypertension
- Reduction of the risk of stroke in patients with hypertension and left ventricular hypertrophy
Pharmacology:
- Losartan and its active metabolite block the vasoconstrictive and aldosterone-secreting effects of angiotensin II by selectively blocking its binding to the AT1 receptor
- Hydrochlorothiazide is a thiazide diuretic that affects renal tubular mechanisms of electrolyte reabsorption
Dosage:
- Usual starting dose: 50/12.5 mg once daily
- Maximum dose: 100/25 mg once daily
- Antihypertensive effect is usually attained within three weeks after initiation of therapy
Administration:
- May be taken with or without food
- Can be administered with other antihypertensive agents
Interactions:
- No significant drug-drug interactions with Losartan Potassium have been found in interaction studies
- Thiazide diuretics may interact with alcohol, barbiturates, narcotics, antidiabetic drugs, and other antihypertensive drugs
- Absorption of Hydrochlorothiazide is impaired in the presence of anionic exchange resins
Contraindications:
- Hypersensitivity to any component of the product
- Anuria or hypersensitivity to other sulfonamide-derived drugs
Side Effects:
- Symptoms may include symptomatic hypotension, dizziness, hyperkalemia, angioedema, vertigo, gastrointestinal disturbances, and others
Pregnancy & Lactation:
- Angiotensin-II receptor antagonists should be avoided in pregnancy unless essential; not recommended during breastfeeding
Precautions & Warnings:
- Periodic determination of serum electrolytes should be performed
- Use with caution in patients with renal impairment, hepatic impairment, and pediatric patients
Overdose Effects:
- Manifestations may include hypotension, tachycardia, bradycardia, electrolyte depletion
Therapeutic Class:
- Combined antihypertensive preparations
Storage Conditions:
- Do not store above 30°C; keep out of the reach of children
