Antazol 0.05% Nasal Drops

Presentation:

  • Contains Xylometazoline Hydrochloride 0.05%.
  • Available in 15 ml plastic droppered bottles.

Indications:

  • For the symptomatic relief of nasal congestion in colds, rhinitis (including seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis), and sinusitis in children under 12 years.

Dosage and Administration:

  • Children 6 to under 12 years: 2 or 3 drops of the 0.05% solution in each nostril once or twice daily.
  • Children 3 months to under 6 years: 1 or 2 drops of the 0.05% solution in each nostril once or twice daily.
  • Infants less than 3 months: Not to be used in infants less than 3 months.

Pharmacology: Xylometazoline is a sympathomimetic agent with marked alpha-adrenergic activity. It constricts the nasal blood vessels, thereby decongesting the mucosa of the nose and neighboring regions of the pharynx, allowing for easier breathing through the nose. The effect begins within a few minutes and persists for several hours.

Side Effects: The following side effects have occasionally been encountered:

  • A burning sensation in the nose and throat.
  • Local irritation.
  • Nausea.
  • Headache.
  • Dryness of the nasal mucosa.
  • Systemic cardiovascular effects have occurred, and this should be kept in mind when giving Antazol to people with cardiovascular disease.

Precautions:

  • Antazol 0.05% nasal drops should be used with caution in children with cardiovascular disease due to potential systemic cardiovascular effects.
  • Should not be used for prolonged periods in cases of chronic rhinitis due to the risk of rebound congestion and drug-induced rhinitis.
  • Each pack should be used by one person only to prevent cross-infection.
  • Patients are advised not to take decongestants for more than seven consecutive days.

Contraindications:

  • Contraindicated in patients with trans-sphenoidal hypophysectomy or surgery exposing the dura mater.
  • Contraindicated in patients who are hypersensitive to Xylometazoline.
  • Not to be used in infants less than 3 months.

Pregnancy & Lactation: In view of its potential systemic vasoconstrictor effect, it is advisable to take the precaution of not using Antazol during pregnancy. The use of Antazol while breastfeeding should only take place on the instructions of a doctor.

Storage: Protect from light. For reasons of hygiene, do not use the bottle more than 28 days after opening it.

Therapeutic Class: Nasal Anti-histamine preparations (Note: While the therapeutic class mentions "Anti-histamine," Xylometazoline is a sympathomimetic decongestant. This might be a classification nuance within the source).
