Antazol 0.1%

While the name suggests a cream, the available information from Medex primarily describes Antazol 0.1% Nasal Drops. Therefore, the details below pertain to the nasal drop formulation.

Presentation:

  • Contains Xylometazoline Hydrochloride 0.1%.
  • Available in 15 ml plastic droppered bottles.

Indications:

  • For the symptomatic relief of nasal congestion in colds, rhinitis (including seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis), and sinusitis.
  • May also help with tubal block and serous otitis media associated with nasal congestion.

Dosage and Administration:

  • Adults: 2 or 3 drops of the 0.1% solution in each nostril two to three times daily.
  • Not to be used for children under 12 years of age with the 0.1% strength.

Pharmacology: Xylometazoline is a sympathomimetic agent with marked alpha-adrenergic activity. It constricts the nasal blood vessels, thereby decongesting the mucosa of the nose and neighboring regions of the pharynx, allowing for easier breathing through the nose. The effect begins within a few minutes and persists for several hours.

Side Effects:The following side effects have occasionally been encountered:

  • A burning sensation in the nose and throat.
  • Local irritation.
  • Nausea.
  • Headache.
  • Dryness of the nasal mucosa.
  • Systemic cardiovascular effects have occurred.

Precautions:

  • Antazol nasal drops for adults (0.1%) should not be used for children below 12 years.
  • Should not be used for prolonged periods in cases of chronic rhinitis due to the risk of rebound congestion and drug-induced rhinitis.
  • Each pack should be used by one person only to prevent cross-infection.
  • Patients are advised not to take decongestants for more than seven consecutive days.
  • Use with caution in individuals with cardiovascular disease due to potential systemic cardiovascular effects.

Contraindications:

  • Contraindicated in patients with trans-sphenoidal hypophysectomy or surgery exposing the dura mater.
  • Contraindicated in patients who are hypersensitive to Xylometazoline.

Pregnancy & Lactation: Pregnancy Category C. Xylometazoline should not be used during pregnancy. The use of Antazol while breastfeeding should only take place on the instructions of a doctor.

Storage: Protect from light. For reasons of hygiene, do not use the bottle more than 28 days after opening it.

Therapeutic Class: Nasal Anti-histamine preparations (Note: While the therapeutic class mentions "Anti-histamine," Xylometazoline is a sympathomimetic decongestant. This might be a classification nuance within the source).
