Ascobex 

Presentation: Chewable tablets containing 250 mg of Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid). The tablets are flavored and intended to be chewed before swallowing. The packaging typically consists of strips of tablets within a box.

Indications: Indicated for the prevention and treatment of Vitamin C deficiency (scurvy). It aids in wound healing, helps form collagen in connective tissues, enhances iron absorption, contributes to the production of hemoglobin and red blood cells, supports the immune system, and promotes healthy capillaries, gums, and teeth. May also be used to reduce the risk of stroke in the elderly.

Dosage and Administration:

• Prevention of scurvy: 1 tablet daily.
• Treatment of scurvy: 1-2 tablets daily, or as directed by a physician; the dose may be increased depending on the severity of the condition.
• Reduction of risk of stroke in the elderly: 1-2 tablets daily.
• Other cases: 1 tablet daily or as directed by a physician.

The maximum safe dose is 2000 mg daily in divided doses. The tablets should be chewed thoroughly before swallowing.

Side Effects: Ascobex has low toxicity. Mega-doses may cause diarrhea, abdominal bloating, increased iron absorption (harmful in patients with thalassemia, sideroblastic anemia, and hemochromatosis), hyperoxaluria, hyperuricosuria, and hemolysis in patients with glucose-6 phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency.  

Precautions: Ingestion of megadoses (more than 1000 mg daily) during pregnancy has resulted in scurvy in neonates. Megadoses are contraindicated in patients with hyperoxaluria. Ascorbex can interfere with certain lab tests for glucose, uric acid, creatine, and occult blood. Use with caution in patients with renal impairment and G6PD deficiency.

Storage: Store in a dry place below 30°C. Keep out of reach of children.
