Indications

Azelec cream is a topical treatment for mild to moderate inflammatory acne vulgaris.

Pharmacology

The active ingredient, azelaic acid, has antimicrobial properties against Propionibacterium acnes and Staphylococcus epidermidis. This antimicrobial action may be due to its ability to inhibit microbial protein synthesis. Azelaic acid also has an anticomedonal effect by normalizing keratinization, which contributes to its overall clinical activity against acne.

Dosage & Administration

After washing and thoroughly drying the skin, a thin layer of Azelec cream should be gently massaged into the affected areas twice daily, in the morning and evening. Hands should be washed after application. The safety and effectiveness of this cream in pediatric patients under 12 years of age have not been established.

Contraindications

Azelec is contraindicated in patients who are hypersensitive to any of its components.

Side Effects

Local skin irritation, such as redness (erythema), scaling, itching, or a burning sensation, may occur occasionally, typically at the beginning of treatment. In most cases, this irritation is mild and subsides as treatment continues.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Azelec is an FDA Pregnancy Category B drug. It should only be used during pregnancy if clearly necessary. Caution should be exercised when the cream is administered to a nursing mother.

Precautions & Warnings

This product is for external use only. If it comes into contact with the eyes, they should be rinsed immediately and thoroughly with a large amount of water. If eye irritation persists, a physician should be consulted.
