Bactrocin (Mupirocin): A Topical Antibiotic for Skin Infections
Bactrocin contains Mupirocin, a naturally occurring antibiotic. It is indicated for the topical treatment of primary and secondary skin infections caused by susceptible bacteria. This includes conditions like impetigo, folliculitis, and furunculosis, particularly those caused by Staphylococcus Aureus (including MRSA) and Streptococcus Pyogenes. Bactrocin belongs to the therapeutic class of Topical Antibiotic preparations.
How Bactrocin Works (Pharmacology)
Mupirocin's mechanism of action is to inhibit bacterial protein synthesis:
- Inhibits Isoleucyl Transfer-RNA Synthetase: It reversibly and specifically binds to the bacterial enzyme isoleucyl transfer-RNA synthetase. This enzyme is essential for the bacteria to create the proteins they need to survive and multiply.
- Bactericidal at Topical Concentrations: This unique mode of action effectively halts bacterial protein synthesis. At the concentrations achieved with topical application, mupirocin is bactericidal, meaning it kills the bacteria.
- No Cross-Resistance: Because of its unique mechanism, it does not demonstrate cross-resistance with other classes of antimicrobial agents.
- Broad Spectrum: It is active against a wide range of bacteria responsible for most skin infections, including Staphylococcus aureus (including methicillin-resistant strains) and Streptococcus pyogenes, as well as some gram-negative pathogens.
Key Indications & Benefits
Bactrocin ointment is indicated for the topical treatment of:
- Impetigo
- Folliculitis
- Furunculosis
- Other skin infections caused by susceptible bacteria.
Dosage & Administration
A small amount of Bactrocin ointment should be applied to the affected area three times daily for up to 10 days. The safety and effectiveness have been established for a wide age range, from 2 months to 16 years.
Important Considerations & Warnings
It is crucial to discuss your full medical history with your doctor before using Bactrocin.
Contraindications:
- Known hypersensitivity reactions to Mupirocin or any of the components of the preparation.
Side Effects:
- Common: Burning, stinging, or pain at the application site, itching.
- Other possible side effects: Rash, nausea, erythema (redness), dry skin, tenderness, swelling, contact dermatitis, and increased exudate.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
- Pregnancy: Animal studies show no harm to the fetus, but there is no clinical experience in pregnant women. It should be used only when the potential benefits outweigh the possible risks.
- Lactation: It is unknown if mupirocin is excreted in human milk. Caution should be exercised when administering it to a nursing woman.
Precautions & Warnings:
- Not for Ophthalmic or Intra-nasal Use: The ointment is not for use in the eyes or nose. Care should be taken to avoid the eyes when applying to the face.
- Risk of Overgrowth: As with other antibacterial products, prolonged use may lead to the overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms, including fungi.
- Sensitization/Irritation: If severe local irritation or a sensitization reaction occurs, discontinue use and institute an alternative therapy.
- Central Venous Cannulation: It is not suitable for use in conjunction with cannulae or at the site of central venous cannulation.
- Mixing with Other Preparations: Mixing Bactrocin ointment with other preparations can dilute it, reducing its antibacterial activity and stability.
Overdose Effects
- There is currently limited data on overdose with Bactrocin ointment. In case of an overdose, treatment should be supportive.
