Barbit 30
Presentation: Each tablet contains Phenobarbital BP 30 mg.
Indications: Barbit (Phenobarbital) is indicated for the control of generalized tonic-clonic (grand mal) and partial seizures. It may also be used for the emergency control of certain acute convulsive episodes, such as those associated with status epilepticus, eclampsia, and meningitis. Additionally, it has sedative and hypnotic properties and may be used for short-term treatment of insomnia or for daytime sedation.
Dosage and Administration: Dosage should be individualized and determined by a healthcare professional based on the specific condition being treated, the patient'sage, weight, and response.
Barbit tablets are administered orally. Due to the potential for dependence, prolonged use should be avoided. Abrupt withdrawal may precipitate status epilepticus.
Side Effects: Common adverse reactions include drowsiness, lethargy, dizziness, and ataxia. Cognitive impairment and behavioral disturbances, particularly in children and the elderly, may occur. Other potential side effects include rash, gastrointestinal upset, and respiratory depression.
Precautions: Barbit is contraindicated in patients with porphyria, severe respiratory disease with dyspnea or obstruction, and uncontrolled pain. Caution should be exercised in patients with a history of drug abuse, hepatic or renal impairment, cardiovascular disease, or depression with suicidal tendencies. Phenobarbital is a barbiturate and has a potential for dependence. It can interact with many other medications, including oral contraceptives, anticoagulants, and certain antiepileptics. Use during pregnancy may be harmful to the fetus.
Storage: Store below 30°C in a dry place, protected from light. Keep out of reach of children.
Note: This information is a general overview. Phenobarbital is a controlled substance with significant risks. Always consult a healthcare professional for specific prescribing information and guidance.
