Bendopa 50
Description
Bendopa 50 contains levodopa and benserazide. This combination is used to treat Parkinson's disease, a progressive neurological disorder that affects movement. Levodopa is a precursor of dopamine, a neurotransmitter that is deficient in Parkinson's disease patients, while benserazide inhibits the breakdown of levodopa, allowing more of it to reach the brain.
Pharmacology
Levodopa is converted to dopamine in the brain, increasing dopamine levels and helping to alleviate the symptoms of Parkinson's disease. Benserazide is a dopa decarboxylase inhibitor that does not cross the blood-brain barrier. By inhibiting dopa decarboxylase in peripheral tissues, benserazide reduces the peripheral metabolism of levodopa, resulting in a higher proportion of levodopa reaching the brain.
Dosage & Administration
The dosage of Bendopa 50 varies depending on the severity of the condition and individual patient response.
The usual initial dosage is one capsule (50 mg levodopa/12.5 mg benserazide) three or four times daily.
The dosage may be increased gradually as needed, under close medical supervision.
The maximum daily dose should not exceed 8 capsules.
Bendopa 50 should be taken orally. The tablets should be swallowed whole with water.
Contraindications
Bendopa 50 is contraindicated in patients with:
Known hypersensitivity to levodopa, benserazide, or any other component of the preparation.
Narrow-angle glaucoma.
Severe hepatic, renal, or cardiac decompensation.
Concomitant use with non-selective monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs).
Precautions & Warnings
Cardiovascular Effects: Levodopa/benserazide can cause orthostatic hypotension and syncope.
Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome (NMS): A potentially life-threatening condition, has been reported with sudden discontinuation or dose reduction of levodopa.
Psychiatric Disorders: Levodopa/benserazide may exacerbate pre-existing psychiatric disorders.
Dyskinesias: Levodopa/benserazide may cause or exacerbate dyskinesias (involuntary movements).
Glaucoma: Monitor intraocular pressure in patients with open-angle glaucoma.
Hepatic Impairment: Caution is advised in patients with hepatic impairment.
Renal Impairment: Dose adjustments may be necessary in patients with renal impairment.
