Benidon

Presentation: Benidon 10 Tablet, available in Bangladesh, contains Domperidone 10 mg.

Indications: Benidon (Domperidone) is indicated for the relief of symptoms of nausea and vomiting. It is also used for:

  • Management of dyspeptic symptom complex associated with delayed gastric emptying, gastro-esophageal reflux and esophagitis (such as epigastric fullness, abdominal distension, upper abdominal pain, belching, flatulence, early satiety, nausea, vomiting, and heartburn with or without regurgitation).
  • Prevention and symptomatic relief of acute nausea and vomiting caused by various factors including functional, organic, infectious, dietetic origins, radiotherapy, drug therapy, and migraine.
  • Management of nausea and vomiting induced by dopamine-agonist anti-Parkinson drugs.
  • Facilitating barium transit in follow-through radiological studies.

Dosage and Administration: Benidon 10 tablets should be taken 15-30 minutes before meals.

  • Adults: The usual dose is 10-20 mg (1-2 tablets) every 4-8 hours daily. The maximum daily dose is usually 80 mg.
  • Children: The usual dose is 0.2-0.4 mg/kg body weight every 4-8 hours daily.
  • For acute nausea and vomiting, the maximum treatment duration is typically 12 weeks.
  • Always follow your doctor's specific instructions regarding the dosage and duration of treatment.

Side Effects: Common side effects may include dry mouth, headache, stomach pain, and diarrhea. Domperidone can increase prolactin levels, which may lead to breast enlargement and soreness (gynecomastia and mastalgia), and galactorrhea (milk production in women who are not breastfeeding). Other possible side effects include thirst, nervousness, drowsiness, skin rash, and itching. In rare cases, extrapyramidal reactions (movement disorders) can occur, especially in children. There is a potential increased risk of heart rhythm disorders and cardiac arrest, particularly at higher doses or in individuals with pre-existing heart conditions.

Precautions: Benidon (Domperidone) is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to domperidone or any of the excipients, gastrointestinal hemorrhage, mechanical obstruction or perforation, and prolactin-releasing pituitary tumor (prolactinoma). It should be used with caution in patients with liver or kidney disease and in children due to a potential increased risk of extrapyramidal reactions. Caution is advised during pregnancy and breastfeeding; consult your doctor before use. Avoid concomitant use with drugs that prolong the QT interval.

Storage: Store in a cool, dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
