Generic Name: Rivastigmine

Strength: 1.5mg

Presentation: Capsules, 14 capsules per strip.

Indications:

• Symptomatic treatment of mild to moderately severe Alzheimer's dementia.

• Symptomatic treatment of mild to moderately severe dementia in patients with Idiopathic Parkinson's disease.

Dosage and Administration:

• Initial dose: 1.5 mg twice a day.

• Dose titration: If tolerated after two weeks, the dose may be increased to 3 mg twice a day, and subsequently to 4.5 mg and then 6 mg twice a day, based on tolerability.

• Maintenance dose: 3 mg to 6 mg twice a day. The maximum daily dose is 6 mg twice a day.

• If treatment is interrupted for more than several days, it should be re-initiated at 1.5 mg twice daily.

Side Effects:

• The most commonly reported adverse reactions are gastrointestinal, including nausea (38%) and vomiting (23%), especially during titration.

• Female patients may be more susceptible to gastrointestinal adverse reactions and weight loss.

Precautions:

• Caution is advised for patients with sick sinus syndrome or conduction defects and respiratory diseases.

• It may increase gastric acid secretion and exacerbate urinary obstruction and seizures.

• Use with caution in patients with renal or mild to moderate hepatic impairment.

• Monitor body weight.

• Use with caution in patients with asthma or obstructive pulmonary disease.

• It may worsen extrapyramidal symptoms.
