Bexitrol F 25/250 HFA

Presentation:

  • Each actuation delivers Salmeterol 25 mcg (as Salmeterol Xinafoate BP) and Fluticasone Propionate BP 250 mcg.
  • Available as a pressurised inhalation, suspension in a pressurised container.

Indications:

  • Regular treatment of asthma where a combination product (long-acting β2 agonist and inhaled corticosteroid) is appropriate for:
    • Patients not adequately controlled with inhaled corticosteroids and 'as needed' inhaled short-acting β2 agonist.
    • Patients already adequately controlled on both inhaled corticosteroid and long-acting β2 agonist.
  • Treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Dosage and Administration:

  • For inhalation use only.
  • Adults and adolescents 12 years and older: 2 puffs of Bexitrol F HFA 25/250 twice daily.
  • Patients should be made aware that Bexitrol F HFA Inhaler must be used daily for optimum benefit, even when asymptomatic.
  • Patients should be regularly reassessed by a doctor, so that the strength of Bexitrol F HFA they are receiving remains optimal and is only changed on medical advice.
  • The dose should be titrated to the lowest dose at which effective control of symptoms is maintained.

Pharmacology:

  • Bexitrol F HFA is a combination of Salmeterol and Fluticasone Propionate.
  • Salmeterol is a selective, long-acting beta-2 agonist that relaxes the smooth muscles in the airways, leading to bronchodilation and improved airflow.
  • Fluticasone Propionate is a corticosteroid with mainly glucocorticoid activity. It exerts a topical anti-inflammatory effect in the lungs, reducing symptoms and exacerbations of asthma.

Side Effects:

  • Common side effects may include headache, cold symptoms, oral thrush or oral sores, throat irritation, hoarseness, muscle pain, and joint pain.

Precautions:

  • Use with caution in patients with pulmonary tuberculosis, severe cardiovascular disorders, heart rhythm abnormalities, diabetes mellitus, thyrotoxicosis, and hypokalaemia.
  • Monitor the height of children on prolonged therapy.
  • Do not stop therapy abruptly; treatment should be down-titrated.
  • Advise patients to rinse their mouth out with water and spit out, and/or brush their teeth after each dose to minimise the risk of oropharyngeal candidiasis and hoarseness.

Pregnancy & Lactation:

  • Administration during pregnancy and lactation should only be considered if the expected benefit to the mother is greater than any possible risk to the foetus or child.

Storage:

  • Protect from light and moisture by storing in a cool, dry place below 30°C.
  • Keep out of children's reach.

Therapeutic Class:

  • Long-acting selective β-adrenoceptor stimulants.
  • Respiratory corticosteroids.
