Indications

Biocal-DX is indicated for:

• Treating osteoporosis, rickets, osteomalacia, tetany, and hypoparathyroidism.
• Supplementation during pregnancy and lactation due to increased demand.
• Use in patients with kidney disease and pancreatitis.
• Use during therapy with antiseizure medications.
• Preventing and treating calcium and Vitamin D3 deficiency.

Composition

Each film-coated tablet contains:

• Calcium Carbonate (from Algae Source): 1250 mg (equivalent to 500 mg elemental Calcium)
• Vitamin D3: 200 IU (as Cholecalciferol)

Pharmacology

Calcium (from an Algae source) is an essential mineral for building and strengthening bones. It is useful in the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis. Vitamin D3 is also vital for bone health because it helps the body absorb calcium from the gastrointestinal tract and stimulates bone formation. Clinical studies show that calcium and Vitamin D3 have synergistic effects on bone growth and in the prevention of osteoporosis and fractures.

Dosage & Administration

The usual adult dose is one tablet in the morning and one tablet at night. The tablets should be taken orally.

Interaction

• With medicine: Calcium salts can reduce the absorption of bisphosphonates, ciprofloxacin, fluorides, iron, levothyroxine, tetracycline, and zinc. The absorption of calcium salts is reduced by corticosteroids. There is an increased risk of hypercalcemia when calcium and Vitamin D3 are given with thiazides and related diuretics.
• With food: No clinically significant food-drug interactions have been reported.

Contraindications

Biocal-DX is contraindicated in patients with:

• Hypercalcemia (high blood calcium levels) and hypercalciuria (high urine calcium levels).
• Metastatic calcification.
• Hypersensitivity to any of the components.

Side Effects

Common side effects may include an irregular heartbeat, nausea, dry mouth, weakness, headache, a metallic taste in the mouth, muscle or bone pain, and drowsiness. Rare side effects include high blood calcium levels, constipation, diarrhea, and loss of appetite.

Pregnancy & Lactation

During pregnancy and lactation, Biocal-DX should be used only after carefully considering the risk-benefit ratio.

Precautions & Warnings

Caution should be exercised in patients with renal impairment, sarcoidosis, hypercalcemia, and hypercalciuria.

Use in Special Populations

Biocal-DX is not recommended for children under 12 years of age.

Overdose Effects

High doses may lead to nausea, vomiting, dizziness, loss of appetite, abdominal cramps, headache, and constipation. Treatment for an overdose involves stopping the therapy and ensuring adequate rehydration.
