Presentation: Each tablet contains 5 mg of Folic Acid BP. The tablets are usually yellow in color and intended for oral administration.
Indications: Biofol 5 is indicated for the treatment of folic acid deficiency. Folic acid is a B-vitamin essential for DNA synthesis, cell division, and the formation of red blood cells. It is used in the treatment of megaloblastic anemia resulting from folic acid deficiency. It is also prescribed for women of childbearing age and during pregnancy to prevent neural tube defects in the developing fetus.
Dosage and Administration: The usual adult dose for the treatment of folic acid deficiency is 5 mg daily, or as directed by a physician. For the prevention of neural tube defects in women of childbearing age, a lower dose (e.g., 0.4 mg daily) is typically recommended, and higher doses may be prescribed in women with a history of neural tube defect-affected pregnancies. The tablets should be swallowed whole with water and can be taken with or without food. The duration of treatment depends onthe severity of the deficiency and the individual's response.
Side Effects: Folic acid is generally well-tolerated at recommended doses. Side effects are rare but may include allergic reactions such as skin rash, itching, or hives. Gastrointestinal disturbances have been reported in some cases with higher doses.
Precautions: Biofol 5 should not be used to treat undiagnosed anemia, as it can mask the symptoms of Vitamin B12 deficiency, potentially leading to irreversible neurological damage. In patients with pernicious anemia, folic acid alone is inadequate therapy. Individuals with known hypersensitivity to folic acid should avoid this medication.
Storage: Store in a cool, dry place, protected from light. Keep out of reach of children.
