Blocid 

Presentation: Blocid is available in tablet and oral suspension formulations.

• Blocid Tablets: Each tablet typically contains Sodium Alginate BP 500 mg and Potassium Bicarbonate BP 100 mg. The tablets are [shape and color will vary by manufacturer] and are usually available in blister packs.
• Blocid Suspension: Each 5 ml of the suspension typically contains Sodium Alginate BP 500 mg and Potassium Bicarbonate BP 100 mg. The suspension is usually available in 200 ml bottles.

Indications: Blocid is indicated for the treatment of symptoms of gastro-oesophageal reflux such as:

• Acid regurgitation
• Heartburn
• Indigestion related to reflux, for example, after meals or during pregnancy.
• Symptoms related to reflux esophagitis.
• May also be used to treat symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux during concomitant treatment with or following the withdrawal of acid-suppressing therapy.  

Dosageand Administration:

• Blocid Tablets:
  • Adults and children over 12 years: 1-2 tablets 3-4 times daily, after meals and before bedtime.  
  • Children 6-12 years: ½ - 1 tablet 3-4 times daily, after meals and before bedtime.  
  • Not recommended for children under 6 years unless under medical supervision.
• Blocid Suspension:  
  • Adults and children 12 years and above: 5-10 ml (1-2 teaspoonfuls) 3-4 times daily, after meals and before bedtime.  
  • Children6-12 years: 2.5-5 ml (½ - 1 teaspoonful) 3-4 times daily, after meals and before bedtime.
  • Children 2-6 years: 2.5 ml (½ teaspoonful) 3-4 times daily, after meals and before bedtime.
  • Not recommended for children under 2 years of age.
• The tablets should be chewed thoroughly before swallowing. The suspension should be shaken well before use. No dosage modifications are usually necessary for the elderly or in cases of hepatic impairment. Caution should be exercised in patients with renal insufficiency if a highly restricted salt diet is necessary.

Side Effects: Side effects with Blocid are generally rare and mild. They may include:

• Nausea
• Constipation
• Diarrhea
• Headache
• Allergic manifestations such as urticaria or bronchospasm, anaphylactic or anaphylactoid reactions (very rare).
• Abdominal distension may occur in case of overdosage.

Precautions:

• Blocid should be used with caution in patients with renal impairment and congestive cardiac failure due to the potassium content.
• Care needs to be taken in treating patients with hypercalcemia, nephrocalcinosis, and recurrent calcium-containing renal calculi.  
• There is a possibility of reduced efficacy in patients with very low levels of gastric acid.  
• If symptoms do not improve after seven days, the clinical situation should be reviewed.  
• A time interval of 2 hours should be considered between the intake of Blocid and the administration of other medicinal products, especially tetracyclines, fluoroquinolones, iron salts, thyroid hormones, chloroquine, bisphosphonates, and estramustine.  
• This combination can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding if clinically needed.

Storage: Keep below 30°C, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
