Bukof 50: Effective Relief for Dry Cough

Bukof 50 is a cough suppressant specifically formulated to relieve dry (non-productive) coughs. This includes coughs caused by recent viral infections, as well as pre- and post-operative coughs, and coughs associated with acute lower respiratory tract infections such as tracheitis, laryngitis, and bronchitis. It can also be used for whooping cough and as a sedative for patients undergoing surgical procedures and bronchoscopy.

How Bukof Works (Pharmacology)

Bukof contains Butamirate Citrate, which acts directly on the brain's cough center to suppress the cough reflex. It is a safe and non-sedating compound that is neither chemically nor pharmacologically related to opium alkaloids, making it a distinct option for cough relief. Butamirate Citrate is rapidly and completely absorbed after oral administration, with maximum concentration reached within 9 hours for the sustained-release tablet. It is highly protein-bound, and its plasma elimination half-life is approximately 13 hours. Notably, its active metabolites also possess antitussive (cough-suppressing) action, contributing to its prolonged effect.

Key Indications & Benefits

  • Dry (Non-Productive) Cough Relief: Effectively suppresses irritating dry coughs.
  • Post-Viral Cough: Useful for lingering coughs after a viral infection.
  • Pre & Post-Operative Cough: Helps manage cough before and after surgical procedures.

Important Considerations & Warnings

It is important to discuss your full medical history with your doctor before taking Bukof.

Contraindications:

  • Hypersensitivity (allergy) to the active ingredient, Butamirate Citrate.

Side Effects: Bukof is generally well-tolerated. In rare cases, adverse reactions such as rash, nausea, diarrhea, and vertigo (dizziness) have been observed. These usually resolve after dose reduction or discontinuation of treatment.

Interactions:

  • Expectorants: Concomitant use with expectorants should be avoided. Bukof suppresses the cough reflex, which could lead to mucus retention in the airways if used with expectorants, increasing the risk of bronchospasm and respiratory infections.

Precautions & Warnings:

  • If the cough persists for more than 7 days (or more than 3 days in children younger than 12 years of age), a doctor must be consulted.

Pregnancy & Lactation:

  • Pregnancy: Butamirate Citrate should not be used during the first trimester of pregnancy. During the remainder of pregnancy, it can be used if indicated by a physician, but with caution.
  • Lactation: As a general safety rule, due to the absence of data on the elimination of the active substance in breast milk, the benefits of Butamirate Citrate administration during breastfeeding should be carefully weighed against the potential risks.

Overdose Effects: Accidental overdose can lead to symptoms such as drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of balance, and hypotension (low blood pressure). In case of overdose, standard emergency procedures should be followed, including activated charcoal, saline laxatives, and standard cardio-respiratory resuscitation.
