Cabolin

Presentation: Tablets containing Cabergoline in various strengths (e.g., 0.5 mg, 1 mg).

Indications:

• Treatment of high levels of prolactin in the blood (hyperprolactinemia). This can be due to tumors in the pituitary gland or other causes. Symptoms in women can include missed periods, unwanted breast milk production, and difficulty becoming pregnant. In men, it can cause enlarged breasts and decreased sexual ability/desire.
• Stopping breast milk production (lactation) shortly after childbirth, stillbirth, abortion, or miscarriage. It can also be used if you do not want to continue breastfeeding.
• Sometimes used for other conditions related to hormonal imbalances that cause high prolactin levels.

Dosage & Administration: The dosage varies greatly depending on the condition being treated and your individual response. Your doctor will determine the appropriate dose and schedule for you.

• The usual starting dose for treating high prolactin levels is 0.25 mg twice a week. This may be gradually increased by your doctor every 4 weeks until the desired prolactin level is reached. The maximum dose is usually 1 mg twice a week.
• To stop milk production after delivery, the usual dose is 1 mg as a single dose on the first day after delivery.
• To stop milk production once breastfeeding has started, the usual dose is 0.25 mg every 12 hours for two days.
• Take with food or after food to help reduce nausea. Follow your doctor's instructions carefully.

Side Effects: Common side effects may include nausea, vomiting, stomach upset, constipation, dizziness, lightheadedness, headache, and tiredness. Less common but more serious side effects can include heart valve problems and the formation of scar tissue in organs.

Precautions: Inform your doctor if you have any heart problems, high blood pressure (especially uncontrolled), a history of heart valve problems or fibrotic disorders (scarring of tissue), liver or kidney disease, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Cabergoline can interact with other medications, including certain drugs for high blood pressure, mental illness, and migraine headaches. Avoid alcohol while taking this medication. May cause dizziness or drowsiness, so use caution while driving or operating machinery.
