Calcium DS 500

Presentation: Each tablet contains Calcium Carbonate BP 1250 mg equivalent to Elemental Calcium 500 mg. The "DS" likely indicates a double strength of a previous or related product.

Indications: Calcium DS 500 is indicated for the treatment and prevention of calcium deficiency in conditions such as:

  • Osteoporosis
  • Osteomalacia and rickets
  • Tetany
  • Hypoparathyroidism
  • As a supplement during periods of increased calcium requirements such as pregnancy, lactation, and rapid growth in children.

While calcium carbonate can act as a phosphate binder in some patients with chronic kidney disease, its use for this purpose is generally not preferred due to the risk of causing a positive calcium balance, which can have adverse effects in these patients. Other phosphate binders are typically recommended. If Calcium DS 500 is prescribed for phosphate binding in chronic kidney disease, it should be under strict medical supervision with careful monitoring of calcium and phosphate levels.

Dosage and Administration: The usual adult dosage for calcium supplementation is 1 to 2 tablets daily, or as directed by a physician. It is generally recommended to take the tablets with or after meals to enhance absorption. Swallow the tablets whole with plenty of water. Do not exceed the recommended dose. The dosage for phosphate binding in chronic kidney disease will be specifically determined by the physician based on individual patient needs and laboratory values.

Side Effects: Common side effects may include:

  • Gastrointestinal disturbances such as constipation, flatulence, nausea, and abdominal pain.
  • Rarely, hypercalcemia (high levels of calcium in the blood) may occur, especially with high doses or in individuals with impaired kidney function. Symptoms of hypercalcemia may include weakness, fatigue, increased thirst, increased urination, and bone pain.

Precautions:

  • Calcium DS 500 is contraindicated in patients with hypercalcaemia, hypercalciuria, and hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients.
  • Use with caution in patients with renal impairment, cardiac disease, and those with a history of kidney stones.
  • Monitor serum calcium levels regularly, especially during long-term use and in patients with renal impairment.
  • May interact with several medications, including:
    • Tetracycline and quinolone antibiotics (calcium can reduce their absorption; separate administration times by at least 2-3 hours).
    • Bisphosphonates (calcium can reduce their absorption; separate administration times).
    • Levothyroxine (calcium can interfere with absorption; separate administration times).
    • Thiazide diuretics (may increase serum calcium levels).
    • Cardiac glycosides (e.g., digoxin; monitor for increased risk of toxicity).
    • Iron supplements (calcium can reduce iron absorption; separate administration times).

Storage: Store in a cool and dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children. Store below 30°C.
