Presentation: Tablets containing carbimazole.
Indications: Indicated for the management of hyperthyroidism, including Graves' disease and thyrotoxicosis. It is also used in the preparation of patients for thyroidectomy and radioactive iodine therapy.
Dosage and Administration: Initial dose typically 20-60 mg daily in divided doses until euthyroid. Maintenance dose usually 5-15 mg daily as a single dose. In children, the initial dose is usually based on body weight. Duration of treatment is typically 18 to 24 months. Follow physician's instructions.
Side Effects: Common side effects may include rash, itching, skin pigmentation, tingling sensations, headache, joint pain, and gastrointestinal disturbances. Less common but potentially serious side effects include drug fever, lupus-like syndrome, vasculitis, nephritis, liver disorders (jaundice), and taste disturbances. A rare but serious side effect is a decrease in white blood cell count (agranulocytosis), which can increase the risk of infection.
Precautions: Use with caution in patients with tracheal obstruction due to potential thyroid enlargement. Monitor for signs of bone marrow depression or liver dysfunction. Carbimazole can cross the placenta and is excreted in breast milk; use during pregnancy and breastfeeding requires careful consideration and the lowest effective dose. Regular monitoring of thyroid function and blood counts is necessary.
Storage: Store below 30°C, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
