Carbizol 5

Presentation: Each tablet contains 5 mg of carbimazole.

Indications: Carbizol is indicated for the management of hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid gland), including:

  • Thyrotoxicosis (including thyroid storm).
  • Preparation of patients for thyroidectomy (surgical removal of the thyroid gland).
  • Therapy prior to and post radio-iodine treatment.
  • Long-term management of hyperthyroidism.

Dosage and Administration: The dosage should be individualized based on the severity of the condition.

  • Adults: The usual initial dose is 20 to 60 mg daily, administered in 2 or 3 divided doses, until the patient becomes euthyroid (normal thyroid function). The maintenance dose is usually 5 to 15 mg daily, taken as a single dose.
  • Children (below 12 years): The usual initial dose is 250 mcg/kg/day in divided doses.
  • Children (3-17 years): The usual initial daily dose is 15 mg per day, adjusted according to response. The duration of treatment is usually 18 to 24 months. The tablets should be swallowed whole with water and can be taken with or without food, preferably at a fixed time each day.

Side Effects: Common side effects may include skin rash, itching, headache, nausea, joint pain, and gastrointestinal disturbances. Less common but potentially serious side effects include agranulocytosis (low white blood cell count, which can increase the risk of infection), liver problems (jaundice, abdominal pain), and allergic reactions.

Precautions: Carbizol is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to carbimazole or other thiourea antithyroid agents. It should be used with caution in patients with a history of bone marrow depression or liver disease. Women of childbearing potential should use effective contraception during treatment. Carbizol can cause harm to an unborn baby, and it passes into breast milk, therefore breastfeeding is not recommended. Patients should be monitored for signs and symptoms of infection, especially sore throat or fever, and liver dysfunction. Regular blood tests to monitor thyroid function and blood cell counts are necessary.

Storage: Store below 30°C, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
