Ceevit DS 

Presentation: Each tablet contains Ascorbic Acid BP and Sodium Ascorbate BP equivalent to 500 mg of Ascorbic Acid BP.

Indications: Ceevit DS is indicated for the prevention and treatment of Vitamin C deficiency (scurvy). It may also be used in conditions such as:

  • Pregnancy and lactation
  • Infections
  • Trauma and burns
  • Cold exposure
  • Following surgery
  • Fever and stress
  • Peptic ulcer and cancer
  • Certain types of anemia
  • Dental problems
  • Infertility and atherosclerosis
  • Fractures and leg ulcers
  • Hay fever and vascular thrombosis prevention
  • Certain toxicities

It may also be used to reduce the risk of stroke in the elderly.

Dosage and Administration:

  • For prevention of scurvy: 1 tablet daily.
  • For treatment of scurvy: 1-2 tablets daily, or as directed by a physician (dose may be increased depending on severity).
  • For reducing the risk of stroke in the elderly: 1-2 tablets daily.
  • In other cases: 1 tablet daily or as directed by a physician.
  • The maximum safe dose is 2000 mg daily in divided doses.

The tablet is usually administered orally. If oral administration is not feasible or malabsorption is suspected, it may be given intramuscularly, intravenously, or subcutaneously, with intramuscular being the preferred parenteral route.

Side Effects: Ceevit DS has low toxicity. Mega-doses of Vitamin C may cause:  

  • Diarrhea  
  • Abdominal bloating  
  • Harmful iron over-absorption in patients with thalassemia, sideroblastic anemia, and hemochromatosis  
  • Hyperoxaluriaand hyperuricosuria
  • Hemolysis in patients with glucose-6 phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency
  • Fetal abortion in pregnant women taking more than 5 g daily.

Precautions:

  • Ingestion of megadoses (more than 1000 mg daily) during pregnancy may result in scurvy in neonates.
  • Megadoses are contraindicated in patients with hyperoxaluria.
  • Vitamin C can cause false positive reactions in certain tests for glucose, uric acid, creatine, and occult blood.

Drug Interactions: Ascorbic acid is incompatible in solution with several medications, including aminophylline, neomycin, erythromycin, and certain sulfa drugs. It can also increase iron absorption and the apparent half-life of paracetamol.

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation: The drug is safe in normal doses during pregnancy and lactation. However, daily intake of 5 g or more has been reported to cause abortion.

Storage: Store in a dry place below 30°C, away from light and out of reach of children.
