Citazar 500

Presentation: Each tablet contains 500 mg of levetiracetam. 

Indications:Citazar is an antiepileptic medicine used to treat seizures (fits) in epilepsy.It is indicated:

• As monotherapy in adults and adolescents from 16 years of age with newly diagnosed epilepsy, for the treatment of partial-onset seizures with or without secondary generalization.
• As adjunctive therapy:
  • In adults and adolescents from 12 years of age with idiopathic generalized epilepsy, for the treatment of myoclonic seizures.
  • In adults and adolescents from 12 years of age with idiopathic generalized epilepsy, for the treatment of primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures. 
  • In adults, adolescents, and children from 4 years of age, for the treatment of partial-onset seizures with or without secondary generalization.

Dosage and Administration: The dosage should be individualized according to the patient's condition and response. Citazar tablets should be swallowed whole with liquid and can be taken with or without food.  

• Monotherapy in adults and adolescents from 16 years:The usual starting dose is 250 mg twice daily, which is increased to a therapeutic dose of 500 mg twice daily after two weeks.The dose can be further increased every two weeks by 250 mg twice daily based on clinical response, with a maximum dose of 1500 mg twice daily. 
• Adjunctive therapy in adults (≥18 years) and adolescents (12 to 17 years) weighing 50 kg or more:  The initial therapeutic dose is 500 mg twice dailyand can be started on the first day of treatment. The daily dose can be increased up to 1500 mg twice daily based on clinical response and tolerability. 
• Adjunctive therapy in children aged 4 to 11 years & adolescents (12 to 17 years) weighing less than 50 kg:The initial therapeutic dose is 10 mg/kg twice daily.The dose can be increased up to 30 mg/kg twice daily based on clinical response and tolerability. Dose changes should not exceed increases or decreases of 10 mg/kg twice daily every two weeks. The lowest effective dose should be used.  

Side Effects:Common side effects may include sleepiness, fatigue, headache, dizziness, and weakness.Other possible side effects include nausea, vomiting, decreased appetite, behavioral changes, aggression, irritability, agitation, and nasal congestion.

Precautions: Levetiracetam should not be stopped abruptly. Patients should be monitored for signs of depression and/or suicidal thoughts.Caution should be exercised in patients with kidney problems, and dose adjustment may be needed.

Storage: Store below 30°C, protected from moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
