Comprid 80

Presentation: Each tablet contains 80 mg of gliclazide. Comprid 80 tablets are [shape and color will vary by manufacturer, often white or off-white and round or oval] and may be scored for dose adjustment. They are available in blister packs.

Indications: Comprid is indicated for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults when diet, exercise, and weight loss alone are not enough to control blood sugar levels. It belongs to a class of drugs called sulfonylureas, which work by stimulating the pancreas to release more insulin.  

Dosage and Administration: The dosage of Comprid should be determined by the doctor based on individual blood glucose levels and may be adjusted over time.

• The usual starting dose is 40-80 mg once daily.
• The dose may be increased gradually at intervals of 1-2 weeks based on blood glucose response.
• The usual daily dose ranges from 80 to 240 mg, taken as a single dose in the morning.
• Higher doses (up to 320 mg) may be divided into two doses and taken with breakfast and the main evening meal.
• Comprid tablets should be swallowed whole with a glass of water and should be taken with meals to help reduce the risk of hypoglycemia. It is important not to skip meals while taking Comprid.

Side Effects: The most common side effect of Comprid is hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). Symptoms of hypoglycemia can include sweating, paleness, anxiety, rapid heartbeat, hunger, headache, drowsiness, weakness, confusion, and difficulty concentrating.

Other possible side effects may include:

• Gastrointestinal disturbances such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, and abdominal pain.
• Skin reactions such as rash, itching, and hives.
• Liver problems (rare).
• Blood disorders (rare).
• Weight gain.

Precautions: Comprid is contraindicated in patients with:

• Type 1 diabetes mellitus
• Diabetic ketoacidosis
• Severe kidney or liver disease
• Hypersensitivity to gliclazide or other sulfonylureas or sulfonamides
• Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Caution should be exercised in elderly patients, patients with impaired kidney or liver function, and those with conditions that may increase the risk of hypoglycemia (e.g., irregular eating habits, strenuous exercise, alcohol consumption). Regular blood glucose monitoring is essential during treatment with Comprid.

Storage: Store below 30°C in a dry place, protected from light. Keep out of reach of children.
