Convules CR 500 Tablet

Generic Name:Sodium Valproate (in a controlled-release formulation)  

Manufacturer:Opsonin Pharma Limited (in Bangladesh)  

Presentation: Each controlled-release tablet contains Sodium Valproate BP equivalent to Valproic Acid 500 mg.

Indications: Convules CR is used for the treatment of:

  • Epilepsy, including generalized tonic-clonic seizures, absence seizures, and partial seizures.  
  • Bipolar disorder, for the treatment of manic episodes and as maintenance therapy.  

Dosage and Administration: The dosage is individualized by your doctor based on your condition and response to treatment.

  • Epilepsy (Adults and Children): Usually started at a low dose and gradually increased. The total daily dose is usually divided and taken once or twice daily. The controlled-release formulation allows for once-daily dosing in some cases.
  • Bipolar Disorder (Adults): The initial dose and titration schedule will be determined by your doctor.

Convules CR tablets should be swallowed whole and should not be crushed or chewed. Taking it with food may help reduce stomach upset.

Side Effects: Common side effects may include:

  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or constipation
  • Heartburn or stomach pain
  • Drowsiness, dizziness
  • Headache
  • Changes in appetite or weight
  • Tremor
  • Hair loss

Less common but potentially serious side effects can occur. It is important to contact your doctor immediately if you experience any unusual symptoms, such as:

  • Signs of liver problems (yellowing of the skin or eyes, persistent nausea or vomiting, severe abdominal pain)
  • Severe allergic reactions (rash, itching, swelling, difficulty breathing)
  • Unusual bleeding or bruising
  • Changes in mental state or behavior
  • Pancreatitis

Precautions:

  • Inform your doctor about any pre-existing medical conditions, including liver or kidney problems, a history of pancreatitis, bleeding disorders, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Sodium valproate can harm an unborn baby, especially if taken during pregnancy. Women of childbearing potential should use effective contraception.
  • Convules CR may cause drowsiness and dizziness; use caution when driving or operating machinery.
  • Do not stop taking this medication suddenly without consulting your doctor, as this can increase the risk of seizures.

Contraindications: Convules CR is contraindicated in patients with:

  • Known hypersensitivity to sodium valproate or any of the inactive ingredients.
  • Active liver disease or significant hepatic dysfunction.
  • Known urea cycle disorders.
  • Porphyria.

Drug Interactions: Sodium valproate can interact with various medications. Inform your doctor about all the medicines you are currently taking, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, and herbal supplements. Significant interactions can occur with other antiepileptic drugs, certain antidepressants, and anticoagulants.  

Storage: Store in a cool and dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
