Coralben D

Presentation: Each film-coated tablet contains Calcium Carbonate USP (from coral source) equivalent to Elemental Calcium 500 mg and Vitamin D3 USP 200 IU (as Cholecalciferol).

Indications: Coralben D is indicated for the treatment and prevention of calcium and Vitamin D deficiency and is used in conditions such as:

  • Osteoporosis
  • Osteomalacia
  • Tetany
  • Hypoparathyroidism
  • Disorders of osteogenesis
  • As a supplement in case of inadequate intake of calcium in childhood diet
  • Rickets
  • Pregnancy and lactation
  • Elderly patients
  • Other calcium deficiency symptoms

It can also be used as a phosphate binder in chronic renal failure and in pancreatitis.

Dosage and Administration: The usual adult dosage is one tablet once or twice daily with plenty of water, preferably with or just after a meal to enhance absorption, or as directed by the physician.

Side Effects: Orally administered Calcium Carbonate may be irritating to the gastrointestinal tract. Common side effects may include flatulence, diarrhea, and constipation. Hypercalcemia is rarely produced by administration of Calcium alone but may occur when large doses are given to patientswith chronic renal failure.

Precautions: Coralben D is contraindicated in patients with hypercalcemia, hypercalciuria, hyperparathyroidism, nephrolithiasis (kidney stones), and hypersensitivity to any component. Careful monitoring of serum calcium levels may be needed in patients with mild hypercalciuria and mild to moderate renal impairment, especially during long-term use. Use with caution in patients with a history of renal stones and in immobilized patients with osteoporosis due to the increased risk of hypercalcemia.

Drug Interactions: Oral calcium can reduce the absorption of tetracycline and fluoride preparations; a minimum of 3 hours should be allowed between ingestion of these medications. Thiazide diuretics reduce the renal excretion of calcium, potentially leading to hypercalcemia. Systemic corticosteroids may reduce calcium absorption. Concomitant ingestion of certain foods like spinach, cereals, milk, and its derivatives may reduce the intestinal uptake ofcalcium. Calcium may interact with digoxin; serum calcium levels should be monitored carefully if these drugs are used together.

Storage: Store in a cool and dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children. Store below 30°C.
