Coralmet-D

Presentation: Each tablet typically contains Calcium Carbonate USP (from coral source) equivalent to Elemental Calcium 500 mg and Vitamin D3 USP 200 IU (as Cholecalciferol). Available in strips, manufactured by Somatec Pharmaceuticals Ltd. and other pharmaceutical companies in Bangladesh.

Indications: Indicated for the prevention and treatment of calcium and Vitamin D deficiency, and as an adjunct to specific therapy for osteoporosis. It is also used in conditions such as:

  • Osteomalacia
  • Tetany
  • Hypoparathyroidism
  • As a supplement in cases of inadequate dietary calcium intake, during pregnancy and lactation, childhood growth, and in elderly patients.
  • May also be used as a phosphate binder in chronic renal failure under medical supervision.

Dosage and Administration: The usual adult dosage is 1 tablet once or twice daily with plenty of water, preferably with a meal to ensure better absorption, or as directed by a physician.

Side Effects: Orally administered Calcium Carbonate may cause gastrointestinal irritation and constipation. Hypercalcemia is rare with calcium alone but can occur with high doses in patients with chronic renal failure. Allergic reactions, irregular heartbeats, nausea, vomiting, decreased appetite, dry mouth, and drowsiness may occur. Skin rash has been reported with Vitamin D supplementation.

Precautions:

  • Contraindicated in patients with hypercalcaemia, hyperparathyroidism, hypercalciuria, nephrolithiasis, severe renal insufficiency, and hypersensitivity to any component of the product.
  • Use with caution in patients with renal impairment and during concomitant digoxin therapy (requires careful monitoring of serum calcium levels).
  • Thiazide diuretics may increase serum calcium levels. Systemic corticosteroids may reduce calcium absorption. Calcium may interact with tetracycline antibiotics, bisphosphonates, levothyroxine, and iron preparations; separate administration times may be needed.

Storage: Store in a cool and dry place, protected from light. Keep out of reach of children. Store below 30°C.
