D-Fen 0.5 Tablet

Presentation: Each tablet contains 0.5 mg of Pizotifen (as Pizotifen Malate). 

Indications: D-Fen (Pizotifen) is indicated for the prophylactic (preventative) treatment of vascular headaches of the migraine type, including classical migraine, common migraine, and cluster headache. It is not effective in relieving migraine attacks once they have started.

Dosage and Administration:

• Adults: The usual initial dose is 0.5 mg at night or as directed by a physician. The maintenance dose is usually 1.5 mg daily, taken as a single dose at bedtime or divided into three doses. The dosage can be adjusted by your doctor up to a maximum of 4.5 mg daily. Up to 3 mg may be given as a single daily dose.
• Children (over 2 years): The usual dose is up to 1.5 mg daily, usually divided. A single dose of up to 1 mg may be given at night.
• D-Fen 0.5 tablets can be taken with or without food. Follow your doctor's instructions carefully.

Side Effects: The most common side effects are:

• Drowsiness
• Increased appetite, which may lead to weight gain.

Other less frequent side effects may include:

• Dizziness
• Dry mouth
• Nausea
• Constipation
• In children, CNS stimulation may occur.

Precautions:

• Patients should be warned about the possibility of drowsiness and its potential impact on driving or operating machinery.
• Caution is advised in patients with:
  • Urinary retention
  • Closed-angle glaucoma
  • Renal impairment
• Avoid abrupt withdrawal of the medication.
• Pregnancy and Lactation: Use during pregnancy should only occur under compelling circumstances as clinical data is limited. It is not recommended for nursing mothers.
• Drug Interactions: D-Fen may increase and prolong the drowsiness caused by tranquilizers, hypnotics, and antidepressants used concurrently. It should not be used in patients taking monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). Alcohol may enhance the sedative effects of D-Fen.

Storage: Keep in a dry place away from light and heat. Keep out of reach of children.
