Description

D-Fen 1.5 Tablet contains pizotifen and is used to prevent migraine headaches, including classical, common, and cluster types. It does not treat ongoing migraine attacks.

Pharmacology

Pizotifen works by affecting several substances in the body that are thought to contribute to migraines. It blocks the action of serotonin and histamine, which can cause blood vessels in the head to become more permeable. It also influences how the body perceives pain, potentially reducing migraine severity.

Furthermore, pizotifen reduces the activity of serotonin by blocking specific receptors and may inhibit bradykinin, another substance involved in migraine. It might also affect how platelets absorb serotonin, which can influence blood vessel tone. Notably, pizotifen can stimulate appetite.

Dosage & Administration

The typical adult dosage is 1.5 mg daily, taken either as a single dose at night or divided into three doses. A doctor may adjust the dosage, up to 4.5 mg daily, depending on individual needs. Children over two years old can take up to 1.5 mg daily, usually divided, with a maximum single dose of 1 mg at night.

Contraindications

D-Fen 1.5 is contraindicated in those with hypersensitivity to its ingredients.

Important precautions include potential drowsiness, which can impair driving or operating machinery. The effects of alcohol, sedatives, and some antihistamines may be increased when taken with D-Fen 1.5. Caution is advised in patients with urinary retention or kidney problems.
