Deflacort 30

Presentation: Deflacort 30 is presented as tablets, each containing 30mg of deflazacort.

Indications: Deflacort (deflazacort) is a corticosteroid indicated for the treatment of various inflammatory and autoimmune conditions, including:

  • Allergic disorders (e.g., severe asthma, anaphylaxis).
  • Rheumatoid arthritis and other rheumatic diseases.
  • Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and other connective tissue disorders.
  • Skin conditions (e.g., pemphigus, bullous pemphigoid).
  • Kidney disorders (e.g., nephrotic syndrome).
  • Inflammatory bowel disease (e.g., ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease).
  • Eye inflammation (e.g., uveitis, optic neuritis).
  • Blood disorders (e.g., autoimmune hemolytic anemia, idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura).
  • Certain cancers (palliative management of leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma).
  • Prevention of organ rejection after transplantation.
  • Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) in patients 5 years of age and older.

Dosage and Administration: The dosage of Deflacort 30 is highly variable and depends on the specific condition being treated, its severity, and the patient's response. Always follow your doctor's precise instructions.

  • Adults: The initial dose may range from 6 to 90 mg per day, depending on the condition. Maintenance doses are often lower and are adjusted based on clinical response.
  • Children: Dosage is usually based on body weight and the severity of the condition, typically ranging from 0.25 to 1.5 mg/kg per day. For Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy in patients ≥ 5 years, the dose is 0.9 mg/kg/day once orally.
  • Deflacort tablets are taken orally. The daily dose is usually administered as a single dose in the morning.
  • Do not stop taking this medication suddenly, especially after long-term use, as it can lead to withdrawal symptoms. The dosage should be gradually reduced under medical supervision.

Side Effects: Common side effects of deflazacort are similar to other corticosteroids and may include:

  • Increased appetite and weight gain.
  • Fluid retention (swelling).
  • Mood changes, irritability, and difficulty sleeping.
  • Increased blood pressure.
  • Acne.
  • Increased hair growth.
  • Thinning skin and easy bruising.
  • Impaired wound healing.
  • Increased risk of infections.
  • Osteoporosis (bone thinning).
  • Muscle weakness.
  • Cataracts and glaucoma.
  • Increased blood sugar (hyperglycemia) or development of diabetes.

Deflazacort may have a slightly lower risk of some side effects, such as bone loss, compared to other corticosteroids, but this can vary between individuals.

Precautions: Deflacort (deflazacort) is contraindicated in patients with systemic fungal infections and known hypersensitivity to deflazacort or any of its components. Use with caution in patients with:

  • Diabetes mellitus.
  • Hypertension or heart failure.
  • Peptic ulcer disease or other gastrointestinal disorders.
  • Osteoporosis or increased risk of fractures.
  • Psychiatric disorders.
  • Active infections (may mask signs of infection or worsen existing infections).
  • Glaucoma.
  • Liver or kidney disease.
  • Hypothyroidism.
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding (use only if clearly needed and benefits outweigh risks). Live virus vaccines should generally not be given to patients receiving corticosteroids.

Storage: Store Deflacort 30 tablets below 30°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
