Deflacort 6

Presentation: Each tablet contains 6 mg of deflazacort. 

Indications: Deflacort is a glucocorticoid indicated for the treatment of a wide range of conditions, including:

• Inflammatory and Allergic Conditions: Asthma, allergic rhinitis, contact dermatitis, uveitis.
• Rheumatic Disorders: Rheumatoid arthritis, juvenile idiopathic arthritis, polymyalgia rheumatica.
• Autoimmune Diseases: Systemic lupus erythematosus, dermatomyositis, vasculitis.
• Hematologic Disorders: Autoimmune hemolytic anemia, idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura.
• Neurological Disorders: Multiple sclerosis exacerbations.
• Renal Disorders: Nephrotic syndrome.
• Other Conditions: Organ transplantation, certain neoplastic diseases.

Deflazacort is considered a prodrug, which is metabolized to an active metabolite with glucocorticoid activity. Some studies suggest it may have a lower incidence of certain side effects compared to other corticosteroids.

Dosage and Administration: The initial dosage of Deflacort 6 varies depending on the disease being treated and the patient's response. It can range from 0.5 to 90 mg per day. The usual starting dose for many conditions is between 6 to 18 mg daily. Dosage should be individualized based on the severity of the condition and the patient's response. Once a satisfactory response is achieved, the dosage should be gradually reduced to the lowest effective maintenance dose. Deflacort tablets are for oral administration and should be swallowed with fluid, preferably in the morning to coincide with the body's natural cortisol rhythm.

Side Effects: Like other corticosteroids, Deflacort can cause a range of side effects, although some may occur less frequently or with less severity compared to other steroids. Common side effects may include increased appetite, weight gain, fluid retention, mood changes, insomnia, increased blood glucose levels, and increased blood pressure. Long-term use can lead to more serious side effects such as osteoporosis, muscle weakness, skin thinning, easy bruising, increased risk of infections, cataracts, and glaucoma. Adrenal suppression can also occur with prolonged use.

Precautions: Deflacort is contraindicated in patients with systemic fungal infections and known hypersensitivity to deflazacort or any of its components. Caution should be exercised in patients with diabetes mellitus, hypertension, heart failure, osteoporosis, peptic ulcer disease, glaucoma, cataracts, psychiatric disorders, and active infections (especially viral infections like chickenpox or measles). It should be used with caution during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and only if the potential benefits outweigh the risks.Live vaccines should not be given to patients on immunosuppressive doses of corticosteroids.

Storage: Store below 30°C in a dry place, protected from light. Keep out of reach of children.
