Deltasone 5 Tablet
Presentation:Deltasone 5 Tablet, available in Bangladesh, contains Prednisolone 5 mg.
Indications:Deltasone is a corticosteroid medication with a wide range of therapeutic uses due to its anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressant properties.It is indicated for the treatment of various conditions, including:
- Endocrine Disorders:Primary or secondary adrenocortical insufficiency, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, hypercalcemia associated withmalignancy, nonsuppurative thyroiditis.
- Rheumatic Disorders:As adjunctive therapy for short-term administration in acute episodes or exacerbations of psoriatic arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, acute and subacute bursitis, acute nonspecific tenosynovitis,acute gouty arthritis, post-traumatic osteoarthritis, synovitis of osteoarthritis, epicondylitis.
- Collagen Diseases:During an exacerbationor as maintenance therapyin systemic lupus erythematosus, systemic dermatomyositis, acute rheumatic carditis.
- Dermatologic Diseases:Pemphigus, bullous dermatitis herpetiformis, severe erythema multiforme, exfoliative dermatitis, mycosisfungoides, severe psoriasis, severe seborrheic dermatitis.
- Allergic States:Control of severe or incapacitating allergic conditions intractable to adequate trials of conventionaltreatment in seasonal or perennial allergic rhinitis, bronchial asthma, contact dermatitis, atopic dermatitis, serum sickness, drug hypersensitivity reactions.
- Ophthalmic Diseases:Severe acute and chronic allergic and inflammatory processes involving the eye and its adnexa,such as allergic conjunctivitis, keratitis, allergic corneal marginalulcers.
- Respiratory Diseases:Symptomatic sarcoidosis, Loeffler's syndrome not manageable by other means, berylliosis, fulminating or disseminated pulmonary tuberculosis when usedconcurrently with appropriate antituberculous chemotherapy, aspiration pneumonitis.
- Hematologic Disorders:Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura in adults, secondary thrombocytopenia in adults, acquired(autoimmune) hemolytic anemia, erythroblastopenia, congenital (erythroid) hypoplastic anemia.
- Neoplastic Diseases:For palliative management of leukemias and lymphomas in adults, acute leukemia of childhood.
- Edematous States:Toinduce diuresis or remission of proteinuria in the nephrotic syndrome, without uremia, of theidiopathic type or that due to lupus erythematosus.
- Gastrointestinal Diseases:To tide the patient over a critical periodof ulcerative colitis and regional enteritis.
- Nervous System:Acute exacerbations of multiple sclerosis.
- Miscellaneous:Tuberculous meningitis with subarachnoidblock or impending block when used concurrently with appropriate antituberculous chemotherapy,trichinosis with neurologic or myocardial involvement.
Dosage and Administration: The initial dosage of Deltasone varies depending on the specific disease being treated.Dosage requirements are variable and must be individualized based on the disease and the patient's response.
- The usual oral starting dose for adults may range from 5 to 60 mg per day, in single or divided doses.
- In less severe diseases, lower doses may suffice, while severe diseases may require higher initial doses.
- The initial dose should be maintained or adjusted until a satisfactory response is noted.
- After a favorable response is achieved, the maintenance dose should be determined by gradually reducing the initial dose at reasonable intervals until the lowest dose that will maintain an adequate clinical response is reached.
- Deltasone tablets should be taken orally with a glass of water. It is often recommended to take it with or after food to minimize potential gastric irritation.
- Do not stop taking Deltasone suddenly, especially if you have been on it for a prolonged period or at a high dose, as this can lead to withdrawal symptoms.The dose should be tapered gradually under the supervision of a physician.
Side Effects: The frequency and severity of side effects depend on the dose, duration of treatment, and the individual patient's susceptibility. Common side effects may include:
- Increased appetite and weight gain
- Indigestion, stomach irritation
- Nervousness, restlessness
- Mood changes, euphoria, insomnia
- Fluid retention (swelling)
- Increased sweating
- Acne
- Increased hair growth
Less frequent or more serious side effects can include:
- High blood pressure
- Increased blood sugar levels (may worsen diabetes)
- Weakening of bones (osteoporosis)
- Increased risk of infections
- Cataracts and glaucoma (with prolonged use)
- Muscle weakness
- Thinning of the skin, easy bruising
- Poor wound healing
- Suppression of adrenal gland function
Precautions:Deltasone is contraindicated in patients with systemic fungal infections and in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to prednisolone or any of its components.
Caution should be exercised in patients with:
- Diabetes mellitus
- Hypertension
- Congestive heart failure
- Renal insufficiency
- Liver disease
- Peptic ulcer disease or a history of it
- Osteoporosis
- Glaucoma
- Cataracts
- Active or latent tuberculosis
- Untreated systemic infections
- Herpes simplex infection of the eye
- Recent surgery or trauma
- Hypothyroidism
Use in pregnancy and breastfeeding should be carefully considered, and only if the potential benefit outweighs the risk to the fetus or infant. Children on long-term therapy should be closely monitored for growth retardation. Elderly patients may be more susceptible to certain side effects.
Storage: Store Deltasone 5 tablets in a cool (below 30°C) and dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
