Depram

Presentation: Each tablet typically contains Imipramine Hydrochloride BP, available in various strengths (e.g., 25 mg).

Indications: Depram is indicated for the treatment of depressive illness. It is also used in the management of nocturnal enuresis (bedwetting) in children aged 7 years and above.

Dosage & Administration:

  • Depression: For adults, the initial dosage is usually up to 75 mg daily in divided doses, which may be gradually increased by the physician to 150-200 mg daily, and up to 300 mg in hospitalized patients. A single bedtime dose of up to 150 mg may be given. For elderly patients, a lower initial dose of 10 mg daily is recommended, gradually increasing to 30-50 mg daily. Depram is generally not recommended for treating depression in children.
  • Nocturnal Enuresis (Children): For children aged 7-8 years, the usual dose is 25 mg at bedtime. For those aged 8-11 years, the dose is 25-50 mg at bedtime, and for children over 11 years, it is 50-75 mg at bedtime. The maximum treatment period, including gradual withdrawal, is 3 months, and a full physical examination is required before further courses.

Always follow the physician's specific instructions regarding dosage and administration.

Side Effects: Common side effects may include dry mouth, constipation, blurred vision (disturbances of accommodation, increased intraocular pressure), difficulty with urination, increased heart rate, sedation, and dizziness.

Precautions: Depram should be used with caution in patients with cardiac diseases (especially arrhythmias), a history of epilepsy, the elderly, those with hepatic impairment (avoid if severe), thyroid disease, psychoses, angle-closure glaucoma, a history of urinary retention, and those undergoing concurrent electro-convulsive therapy. It is contraindicated during the acute recovery phase following myocardial infarction and in patients with arrhythmias (particularly heart block) or severe liver disease.

Drug Interactions: Depram should not be used with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). It may enhance the depressant action of alcohol. The anticholinergic effects may be additive with other anticholinergic drugs. Methylphenidate may increase the effects of imipramine.

Storage: Store below 30°C, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
