Presentation:Diactin 5 is presented as tablets, each containing 5mg of glipizide.The tablets are usually available in blister packs. The appearance (shape, color, markings) of the tablets may vary depending on the manufacturer in Bangladesh (e.g., Beximco Pharmaceuticals Ltd.).
Indications: Diactin (glipizide) is indicated as an adjunct to diet for the control of hyperglycemia and its associated symptoms in the treatment of non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDMor type 2 diabetes) when diet modification alone has not been effective.
Dosage and Administration: The usual starting dose is 5 mg, given before breakfast. Geriatric patients or those with liver disease may start on 2.5 mg. Dosage adjustments may be made at intervals of several days by increments of 2.5-5 mg based on blood glucose response. The maximum recommended single daily dose is 15 mg. Doses above 15 mg should usually be divided and given before meals. The maximum recommended total daily dose is 40 mg. It is generally recommended to take glipizide approximately 30 minutes before a meal. Follow your doctor's specific instructions.
Side Effects: Common side effects may include hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), nausea, diarrhea, constipation, and gastralgia. Allergic skin reactions may occur. Less common side effects include leucopenia, agranulocytosis, thrombocytopenia, and hepatic porphyria. Dizziness, drowsiness, and headache have also been reported.
Precautions: Diactin (glipizide) is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to glipizide or any component of the product, juvenile-onset diabetes (type 1 diabetes), severe or unstable diabetes complicated by ketosis and acidosis, major surgery, severe sepsis, or severe trauma. Caution should be exercised in patients with impaired renal or hepatic function, and in elderly, debilitated, or malnourished patients due to the increased risk of hypoglycemia.Alcohol consumption should be avoided. Use during pregnancy and breastfeeding is generally not recommended.
