Diatrol 80
Presentation: Each tablet contains 80 mg of gliclazide.
Indications: Diatrol 80 is an oral hypoglycemic agent belonging to the sulfonylurea class. It is indicated for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults when diet and exercise alone are not sufficient toachieve adequate glycemic control.
Dosage and Administration: Diatrol 80 tablets are for oral administration and should be swallowed whole with sufficient liquid. It should be taken with meals.
Side Effects: The most common side effect of Diatrol 80 is hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), which can range from mild to severe. Symptoms may include sweating, tremor, anxiety, confusion, rapid heartbeat, and in severe cases, loss of consciousness or seizures.
Other common side effects may include gastrointestinal disturbances (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, abdominal discomfort), and skin reactions (rash, itching, urticaria).
Less common but potentially serious side effects may include blood disorders (leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, hemolytic anemia), liver problems (jaundice, elevated liver enzymes), and allergic reactions.
Precautions: Patients should be educated about the signs and symptoms of hypoglycemia and how to manage them. Regular blood glucose monitoring is essential.
Diatrol 80 should be used with caution in patients with renal or hepatic impairment, G6PD deficiency, and in elderly or debilitated patients who may be more susceptible to hypoglycemia.
Certain conditions such as fever, trauma, infection, or surgery may affect blood glucose control, and temporary adjustments in antidiabetic therapy may be necessary.
The blood glucose-lowering effect of sulfonylureas may be potentiated by certain drugs (e.g., nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, salicylates, sulfonamides, monoamine oxidase inhibitors, beta-blockers, ACE inhibitors, certain antifungals) and may be reduced by others (e.g., corticosteroids, thiazide diuretics, sympathomimetics). Inform healthcare professionals about all other medications being taken.
Alcohol consumption can affect blood glucose levels in an unpredictable manner and should be avoided or consumed in moderation.
Diatrol 80 is generally not recommended for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Insulin is usually preferred for managing blood glucose in these situations.
Storage: Store at room temperature (15°C to 30°C), protected from moisture and light. Keep out of reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date.
Important Note: This information is for general knowledge and informational purposes only, and does not substitute professional medical advice. Diatrol 80 is a potent medication that can cause hypoglycemia and requires careful medical supervision. Always consult your doctor for specific instructions and guidance regarding its use.
