Presentation: Diazid Tablet contains Gliclazide and is available in strengths such as 80 mg (immediate-release) and 30 mg or 60 mg (modified-release - MR). It is presented as a tablet for oral administration, usually in blister packs.
Indications: Diazid is indicated for type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults when diet, exercise, and weight loss are not enough to control blood sugar. Gliclazide is a sulfonylurea that lowers blood glucose by increasing insulin release from the pancreas. MR formulations provide sustained release for once-daily dosing.
Dosage and Administration: Dosage is individualized by the physician based on blood glucose levels. Immediate-release tablets are taken orally before meals. MR tablets (e.g., Diazid MR) are taken orally once daily with breakfast. Swallow tablets whole. Regular blood glucose monitoring guides dosage adjustments.
Side Effects: The most common side effect is hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), with symptoms like sweating, tremor, dizziness, and confusion. Risk increases with missed meals, strenuous activity, or other antidiabetic drugs. Other possible side effects include gastrointestinal issues (nausea, indigestion) and skin reactions.
Precautions: Diazid is contraindicated in type 1 diabetes, diabetic ketoacidosis, severe kidney or liver impairment, and hypersensitivity to gliclazide or sulfonylureas. Use caution in the elderly and those at high risk of hypoglycemia. Limit alcohol intake. Drug interactions can affect blood glucose control. Regular blood glucose monitoring is crucial.
Storage: Store Diazid tablets below 30°C in a dry place, protected from light and out of reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date.
