Dirozyl IV 

Presentation:Dirozyl IV is an intravenous (IV) infusion solution containing Metronidazole BP.The strength is typically 500 mg in 100 ml.It is available in glass bottles or plastic bags for intravenous administration. Dirozyl is a brand name marketed by The ACME Laboratories Ltd.in Bangladesh.

Indications:Dirozyl (Metronidazole) is an antibiotic and antiprotozoal agent indicated for the treatment of various infections caused by susceptible anaerobic bacteria and protozoa, including:  

  • Intra-abdominal infections (e.g., peritonitis, intra-abdominal abscess).
  • Gynecological infections (e.g., endometritis, tubo-ovarian abscess, post-surgical vaginal cuff infection).
  • Skin and soft tissue infections.
  • Lower respiratory tract infections (e.g., pneumonia, lung abscess).
  • Bone and joint infections.
  • Central nervous system infections (e.g., meningitis, brain abscess).
  • Septicemia.
  • Endocarditis.
  • Surgical prophylaxis in procedures where anaerobic infection is likely.
  • Pseudomembranous colitis caused by Clostridium difficile.
  • Amebiasis (intestinal and extraintestinal).
  • Giardiasis.
  • Trichomoniasis.

Dosage and Administration: Dirozyl IV is administered by intravenous infusion by a healthcare professional. The dosage and duration of treatment depend on the type and severity of the infection, the patient's age, weight, and renal function,and should be determined by a physician.

  • Adults: The usual intravenous dosage is 500 mg every 6 to 8 hours. The maximum daily dose should not exceed 4 grams.
  • Children: The dosage is usually calculated based on body weight.
  • Surgical prophylaxis: A single dose is usually administered shortly before surgery.

The infusion rate should be as prescribed by the physician.

Side Effects: Common side effects may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, and a metallic taste. Less common side effects can include headache, dizziness, drowsiness, rash, and dark urine. Rare but serious side effects may include seizures, peripheral neuropathy, and hypersensitivity reactions.

Precautions: Dirozyl (Metronidazole) is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to metronidazole or other nitroimidazole derivatives. It should be used with caution in patients with:

  • Central nervous system disorders (e.g., epilepsy).
  • Severe hepatic impairment.
  • Blood dyscrasias.

Alcohol should not be consumed during treatment with Dirozyl and for at least 48 hours after the last dose, as it may cause a disulfiram-like reaction (abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, headache, flushing). Dirozyl may interact with certain other medications.

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation: Metronidazole crosses the placental barrier and should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed. It is excreted in breast milk in significant concentrations. Breastfeeding is not recommended during treatment with Dirozyl and should be avoided for at least 12-24 hours after the last dose.

Storage: Store below 25°C, protected from light. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children. The prepared infusion solution should be used promptly and according to the manufacturer's instructions.
