How Duralax Works (Pharmacology)

Bisacodyl is a laxative that primarily acts on the colon to stimulate peristalsis (the wave-like contractions that move food through the digestive tract). It also acts on the small bowel and colon to increase intraluminal water and electrolytes, which softens stool and promotes bowel movement. When applied to the caecum, Bisacodyl initiates a response throughout the entire colon, leading to a comprehensive laxative effect.

• Treatment of constipation.
• Preparation for radiographic or endoscopic examination of the colon (e.g., colonoscopy, barium enema).

Dosage & Administration

For Constipation:

• Adults: 5-10 mg at night. Occasionally, it may be necessary to increase the dose to 15-20 mg.
• Children under 10 years: 5 mg.

Before Radiological Procedures and Surgery:

• Adults: 10 mg orally at bedtime for 2 days before the examination.
• Children: Half of the adult dose.
