Easium Suppository

Generic Name: Diazepam

Presentation: Suppository

Description:

Easium is a benzodiazepine derivative used as a tranquilizer. It has anxiolytic, anticonvulsant, and central muscle relaxant properties. Diazepam works by potentiating the effect of GABA, a neurotransmitter that helps to calm the brain.

Indications:

Easium Suppository is indicated for the short-term treatment of:

  • Mild to moderate anxiety

  • Excitation

  • Agitation

  • Fear

  • Aggressiveness

  • Anxiety reactions caused by stressed conditions

  • Anxiety states with somatic expression

  • Acute alcohol withdrawal

  • Status epilepticus

  • Premedication for surgical procedures

  • Febrile convulsions

  • Insomnia in hospitalized patients

Dosage and Administration:

  • Rectal:

    • In children: A dose of 500 mcg/kg (maximum 10 mg), repeated if necessary.

Contraindications:

Diazepam is contraindicated in patients with:

  • Myasthenia gravis

  • Pulmonary insufficiency

  • Respiratory depression

  • Hypersensitivity to benzodiazepines

Precautions:

  • Prolonged use and abrupt withdrawal should be avoided.

  • Use with caution in patients with:

    • Respiratory disease

    • Muscle weakness

    • A history of drug or alcohol abuse

    • Hepatic or renal impairment

Side Effects:

Easium is generally well-tolerated. Higher doses may cause:

  • Somnolence

  • Dizziness

  • Lightheadedness

  • Confusion

  • Ataxia

Pregnancy and Lactation:

Diazepam and its active metabolites cross the placental barrier and pass into breast milk. It should be avoided if possible during pregnancy and lactation. US FDA pregnancy category D.

Drug Interactions:

  • Concomitant intake with alcohol is not recommended.

  • Sedation may be increased by concomitant use of:

    • Neuroleptics (antipsychotics)

    • Hypnotics

    • Sedative antihistamines

    • CNS depressants (e.g., general anesthetics, narcotic analgesics, or antidepressants)

  • Easium clearance is increased by concomitant administration of phenobarbitone and decreased by cimetidine.
