Indications

Ebasten 10 (Ebastine) is a non-sedating antihistamine used for the symptomatic treatment of:

• Seasonal and Perennial Allergic Rhinitis: To relieve allergy symptoms.
• Chronic Idiopathic Urticaria: To treat hives and associated itching.

Pharmacology

Ebastine is a long-acting and selective H1-histamine receptor antagonist. It works by blocking peripheral H1-histamine receptors, which are responsible for allergic reactions. When taken orally, Ebastine is quickly absorbed and converted into its active metabolite, carebastine, which is responsible for the therapeutic effect.

Dosage & Administration

• Tablet:
  • Adults (>12 years): 10 mg (one tablet) once daily.
  • Children (6-12 years): 5 mg (half tablet) once daily.
• Syrup:
  • Children (2-5 years): 2.5 ml once daily (can be increased to 5 ml for severe cases).
  • Children (6-12 years): 5 ml once daily (can be increased to 10 ml for severe cases). Ebasten can be taken with or without food.

Interaction

• Ketoconazole or Erythromycin: Taking Ebasten with either of these drugs can increase the plasma level of Ebasten and may prolong the QTc interval on an ECG.
• Alcohol or Diazepam: Ebasten may enhance the sedative effect of these substances.
• Theophylline, Warfarin, Cimetidine: Ebasten does not have a significant interaction with these drugs.

Contraindications

Ebasten is contraindicated in patients with a known hypersensitivity to Ebastine or any of the product's ingredients.

Side Effects

The most common side effects are headache, dry mouth, and drowsiness. Less common side effects include abdominal pain, dyspepsia, nausea, and insomnia.

Overdose Effects

In cases of overdose, no significant clinical symptoms have been observed with doses up to 100 mg. There is no specific antidote. Treatment should involve gastric lavage, monitoring of vital signs including ECG, and supportive care.
