Presentation: Tablets containing Ondansetron Hydrochloride BP equivalent to Ondansetron 8 mg. Available in strips or blister packs, with the number of tablets per pack determined by the manufacturing pharmaceutical company in Bangladesh. The 8 mg strength is a commonly prescribed dose for the prevention and treatment of nausea and vomiting.

Indications: Emistat (Ondansetron) is indicated for the prevention of nausea and vomiting associated with emetogenic cancer chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and post-operative nausea and vomiting (PONV). It acts as a selective 5-HT3 receptor antagonist, blocking serotonin release in the small intestine and the chemoreceptor trigger zone, thereby reducing the urge to vomit.

Dosage and Administration: The dosage of Emistat depends on the specific indication and may vary based on the patient's age and the emetogenic potential of the treatment.

• Chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV): For adults, the typical oral dose is 8 mg administered 1 to 2 hours before chemotherapy, followed by 8 mg every 12 hours for a duration of up to 5 days post-chemotherapy.
• Radiotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting: For adults, the usual oral dose is 8 mg administered 1 to 2 hours before each fraction of radiotherapy.
• Post-operative nausea and vomiting (PONV): For adults, a single dose of 16 mg orally one hour before anesthesia or 8 mg orally one hour before anesthesia followed by two subsequent 8 mg doses at 8-hour intervals may be administered.

For pediatric patients, the dosage is usually weight-based and should be determined by a registered medical practitioner. Emistat tablets are for oral administration and can be taken with or without food.

Side Effects: Commonly reported side effects of Ondansetron may include headache, constipation, diarrhea, fatigue, and dizziness. Less frequent side effects can include transient elevations in liver enzymes and hypersensitivity reactions. Patients should consult their healthcare provider if they experience any persistent or bothersome side effects.

Precautions: Emistat is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to ondansetron or other selective 5-HT3 receptor antagonists. Caution should be exercised in patients with a history of cardiac arrhythmias, particularly QT prolongation, and in patients with electrolyte imbalances such as hypokalemia or hypomagnesemia.
